For more than seven years, the SSM Health Dale Michels Heart & Vascular Care team has been offering one of the latest procedures to help patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) management. The FDA-approved WATCHMAN procedure is designed to help a specific group of AFib patients who are poor long-term candidates for oral anticoagulation by implanting a stent-like device into the left atrial appendage via a catheter-based approach.

The WATCHMAN Implant fits into the patient’s left atrial appendage and is designed to permanently close it off and keep those blood clots from escaping, preventing stroke. It’s a permanent device that doesn’t have to be replaced and can’t be seen outside the body. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and takes about an hour. Patients commonly stay in the hospital overnight and leave the next day.

AFib is a heart condition where the upper chambers of the heart (atrium) beat too fast with irregular rhythm (fibrillation). According to the CDC, an estimated 2.7 to 6.1 million Americans are impacted by this condition, and these individuals have a five times greater risk of stroke when compared to individuals with a normal heart rhythm.

The most common treatment to reduce stroke risk in patients with AFib is blood-thinning medication. While very effective at reducing the risk of stroke, blood thinners increase the risk of serious bleeding over time and come with certain requirements and restrictions.

The connection to stroke
AFib incidence is growing and currently affects 9-percent of Americans aged 65 years or older. This condition increases a person’s stroke risk five times and accounts for 20 percent of all strokes.

Traditionally, oral anticoagulant medications helped reduce stroke risk in people with AFib. Numerous drugs are currently FDA-approved for this indication and are the mainstay of stroke reduction treatment. However, their main side effects are bleeding complications and there is a concern about their long-term compliance trends.

An alternative: The WATCHMAN
The WATCHMAN implantation procedure centers on the left atrial appendage, or LAA. The LAA is a part of heart’s left upper chamber where blood pools and may clot. When such a blood clot escapes from the LAA and travels through circulation, it may eventually lodge itself within an organ such as the brain and cut off the blood supply. This is the main mechanism that accounts for strokes in AFib patients.

The WATCHMAN device permanently closes off the LAA to prevent blood clots from escaping. Its insertion uses techniques similar to common ablation procedures.

During the procedure, a narrow tube is inserted into the right femoral vein, and another small opening is made in the border wall between the right and left atria. From there, the provider guides the WATCHMAN device to the LAA where it unfolds and incorporates into the person’s body and stays for the duration of their life. A team consisting of an invasive cardiologist, non-invasive cardiologist, anesthesiologist, and others, are essential for procedural success.

The actual device is about the size of a quarter and is made from light, compact materials often used in other medical implants.

Suitable candidates and success rates
The procedure is suitable for people who have a high stroke risk, a high bleeding risk, and are poor candidates for long term oral anticoagulants but appropriate for short term oral anticoagulants.

Patients will usually be prescribed warfarin (the most common blood thinner) for 45 days after the procedure. In clinical trials, fortunately, nine out of 10 people were able to stop taking the warfarin after that time period ends. It is recommended, however, that they continue to take daily aspirin.

Every October, we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month, a time to recognize the important role physical therapists and physical therapist assistants play in helping people move better, feel stronger, and live healthier lives.

In 2026, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) celebrates National Physical Therapy Month as PT For Future Me, highlighting how physical therapy is not just for recovery after an injury, but also for preventing concerns and maintaining health throughout life.

Physical Therapy Is More Than Rehabilitation

Many people think physical therapy only comes into the picture after surgery or a sports injury. While therapists certainly help patients recover from those challenges, physical therapy offers much more.

Physical therapists can help people:
• Manage pain without relying solely on medication
• Improve strength, balance, and flexibility
• Recover from injuries and surgeries
• Prevent falls and future injuries
• Stay active as they age
• Manage chronic conditions such as arthritis and back pain

The goal is simple: help people move with confidence and enjoy life to the fullest.

Why Movement Matters

Movement is one of the most powerful tools for maintaining health. Regular physical activity can improve heart health, reduce the risk of chronic disease, boost mental well-being, and help people remain independent as they age.

Physical therapists are movement experts. They evaluate how your body moves and create personalized plans to address pain, weakness, stiffness, or balance issues. Unlike generic exercise programs found online, physical therapy is tailored to your unique needs and goals.

PT For Future Me

This year's National Physical Therapy Month theme encourages people to think about their future selves. The choices we make today will impact our health tomorrow. Want to keep hiking in your retirement years? Play with your grandchildren without pain? Maintain your independence as you age? Physical therapy can help build the strength, mobility, and resilience needed to achieve those goals.

Treatment by the Physical Therapy professionals of SSM Health can be an investment in long-term wellness, not just a response to injury. You do not have to wait until pain becomes severe to seek help.

Consider talking to one of our therapists if you experience:
• Persistent aches or pains
• Difficulty with balance
• Limited flexibility or mobility
• Frequent falls or fear of falling
• Recovery after surgery or hospitalization
• Difficulty participating in activities you enjoy

Early intervention can often prevent small problems from becoming major limitations.

National Physical Therapy Month reminds us that health is not just about treating illness. It is about investing in ourselves today so we can enjoy tomorrow. Whether you are recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or simply looking to stay active and independent, physical therapy can help you achieve your goals.

This October, take a moment to think about your future self. The best time to start moving toward a healthier future is now. Because every step you take today is a gift to the person you will become tomorrow.

SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic recently welcomed gastroenterologist Dr. Gregory Capelli to the team. Dr. Capelli cares for individuals with a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease, chronic liver disease, Barrett’s esophagus, colon polyps, and bowel disorders.

Community members can schedule an appointment with Dr. Capelli by calling 920-926-8570.

Q: Why did you choose your specialty SSM?
A: I chose gastroenterology because it combines complex medical decision-making with hands-on procedures. I also wanted the opportunity to build long-term relationships with my patients. I enjoy the variety the field offers and the ability to make a meaningful impact on my patients’ health and quality of life.

Q: What are the most common conditions you see patients for?
A: Some of the most common reasons patients visit me include colon cancer screening and colonoscopies, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), chronic liver disease, chronic diarrhea and constipation, Barrett’s esophagus, and colon polyps.

Q: How would you describe your approach to patient care?
A: I review my patients’ medical history as thoroughly as possible before each visit. During the appointment I am focused on listening carefully and understanding their concerns. My goal is to work collaboratively with each person to develop an individualized treatment plan that aligns with their needs, values, and lifestyle.

Q: What do you wish patients knew about your practice or specialty?
A: Many gastrointestinal conditions are highly treatable, and there is no need to suffer in silence. Preventive care - such as colonoscopies - is also incredibly important. In addition, a family history of cancer is something that should always be discussed and evaluated.

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Q: Do you have a family?
A: I met my wife while we were both training in Milwaukee. She also works in medicine, and we are excited to begin this next chapter of our lives in Wisconsin. Family is very important to us, and we look forward to becoming part of the Fond du Lac community.

Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
A: I enjoy spending time with my wife and family, strength training, fishing, and watching football.

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: My wife and I love to cook, and some of our favorite dishes are Italian. We also enjoy searching for the best Friday fish fry during Lent, which is one of our favorite times of the year. https://www.getcare.ssmhealth.com/find-a-doctor/doctor-details/gregory-p-capelli-do
