Things I NEVER recommend as a weight-loss Nurse Practitioner 👀
❌ Crash dieting
If the plan requires you to basically starve yourself for 2 weeks, I’m out. Sustainable weight loss matters more than losing the most pounds the fastest. The CDC recommends gradual, steady weight loss because it’s more likely to be maintained. (CDC)
❌ Taking a GLP-1 just because you want to lose 10 pounds
Weight-loss medications aren’t meant to be a shortcut for aesthetics alone. They should be considered based on your health, BMI, medical history, risks, goals and other factors. (NIDDK)
❌ Eating as little as possible
The goal isn’t to see how little you can eat. I want you adequately nourished while losing weight—and I want the habits you build to be sustainable.
❌ Completely eliminating carbs
You don’t need to fear bread, rice, potatoes or fruit to lose weight. Your overall eating pattern and calorie intake matter much more than declaring an entire food group “bad.” (NIDDK)
❌ Using medication without changing anything else
Medication can be an incredibly helpful tool for the right patient—but it doesn’t replace nutrition, movement or long-term behavior changes. (NIDDK)
❌ Chasing the lowest number on the scale
Your health is bigger than your weight. I care about your energy, strength, labs, metabolic health, relationship with food and how you feel—not just the number at your appointment.
My expert opinion:
There is no prize for losing weight the fastest. The best plan is the one that is medically appropriate, evidence-based and sustainable enough that you can actually live your life while doing it.
