Neuromuscular Massage in Rock Hill, South Carolina

Specialized Bodywork for Pain Relief, Rehabilitation and Athletic Performance

I’m Ricky Prevatte, and I have practiced massage therapy and therapeutic bodywork for more than 43 years. I served clients throughout Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and surrounding communities before relocating to Rock Hill, South Carolina, six years ago.

Today, I provide advanced neuromuscular and orthopedic massage for clients throughout Rock Hill, York County, Chester and the surrounding area.

My work emphasizes:

* Neuromuscular massage
* Myoskeletal alignment
* Medical and orthopedic massage techniques
* Trigger-point therapy
* Rehabilitation support
* Sports massage and performance enhancement

This Is Not a Routine Massage

A neuromuscular session is very different from a routine, full-body massage performed in the same face-up and face-down sequence every time.

Your position and treatment are determined by what your body needs. You may lie on your back, stomach or side. I may work on the front of your neck, chest, hips or another area that appears unrelated to where you feel pain. Muscles, joints, connective tissue and the nervous system work together, so the source of a problem is not always located where the symptoms appear.

Neuromuscular bodywork seeks to improve communication between the muscular and nervous systems. The goal is to identify areas of tension, restriction or imbalance and help restore more comfortable movement and function.

Every session follows a simple approach:

Assess. Treat. Reassess.

Specialized Techniques and Equipment

After evaluating your movement and symptoms, I select the techniques and tools that best match your condition. There is no cookie-cutter protocol.

G5 Therapeutic Massage

We may begin with the G5 to warm and mobilize soft tissue, address muscular tension and prepare the body for more focused work. A specialized cone-shaped G5 attachment may also be used to work precisely around trigger points.

Therapeutic Cupping

Cupping gently lifts the skin and superficial fascia rather than pressing downward into the body. This decompressive approach may help reduce tissue restriction, calm sensitive areas and prepare the muscles for deeper treatment.

Graston-Style Instrument Work

Specialized stainless-steel tools may be used to scan the tissue, address areas of restriction and apply controlled stripping, sweeping or fanning techniques. These tools help me locate changes in tissue texture and work more precisely.

Trigger-Point and Compression Techniques

Once an area has been prepared, I may use focused friction, compression or sustained pressure to address trigger points. Depending on the location and amount of pressure needed, these techniques may be performed with the hands, fingers, forearms, elbows or knees.

The purpose is not to cause unnecessary pain. It is to apply the appropriate technique in the appropriate area and then reassess your movement and comfort.

Neuromuscular Massage for Rehabilitation

Neuromuscular bodywork may be helpful for people recovering from injuries, repetitive strain, restricted movement or orthopedic problems. Treatment is adapted to your condition, tolerance and goals.

This work may help address:

* Persistent muscular pain
* Trigger points and muscle tightness
* Neck and shoulder restrictions
* Back and hip discomfort
* Limited range of motion
* Postural and muscular imbalances
* Sports-related strain
* Recovery following physical activity

Massage therapy does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. When necessary, I encourage clients to work with their physician, physical therapist or other healthcare provider.

Sports Massage and Performance Enhancement

Neuromuscular therapy is not only for pain. It can also support athletes who want to move more efficiently, recover more effectively and improve performance.

Throughout my career, I have worked with middle-school, high-school, collegiate and professional athletes. Some of the athletes I have assisted went on to earn college scholarship opportunities, compete professionally and participate at championship levels—including the Super Bowl.

Whether you are a developing student athlete, a weekend competitor or a professional, treatment is based on your individual movement patterns and performance goals.

Experience the Difference

After 43 years, I do not rely on a memorized massage routine. I listen to the client, evaluate the body and use the techniques and specialized equipment most appropriate for the problem in front of me.

A lady brought her 20 year-old daughter in this week.
The Daughter had Post concussion syndrome and limes disease.
We administered six hours of treatment two hours each day.
We got rid of the dizziness, much of the headache and all the full body achiness.
The neat thing was I assessed I addressed then reassessed. But I did not palpate the legs until the last day of treatment. Then I reduced swelling in the knee and in both legs, enabled the patient to Dorsey flex and plantar flex.
This as well as hip flexors reduced a lot of edema from the limes .
We had already done abdominal work and opened lymphatic portals.
I only wish I had checked the legs and the knees sooner.
We changed the gate which reduced the major back pain. It was quite a good week for everybody concerned. s head to toe.
Major relief for the headaches and dizziness as well.
Happy child happy parent great week

Parkinson’s disease.

Living with Parkinson’s disease presents unique challenges, and every person experiences those challenges differently. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of working with individuals living with Parkinson’s, and we’ve developed an individualized approach designed to help improve comfort, mobility, and confidence.

Many of our clients also participate in programs such as Rock Steady Boxing, where regular exercise and cardiovascular activity are encouraged. We’ve observed that staying active can play an important role in helping people maintain their quality of life.

At Ricky Prevatte Massage, our focus is on three primary goals:

✅ 1. Helping reduce pain
Every session begins with an assessment. We identify the areas causing discomfort, provide focused treatment, and continually reassess throughout the session so we can address your specific concerns.

✅ 2. Helping reduce stiffness and rigidity
Rigidity can make everyday movement more difficult. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all routine, each session is adapted to the individual’s abilities and comfort level. Some clients are most comfortable beginning treatment in a chair, while others benefit from working on our ADA-accessible treatment table. We meet you where you are and modify each session accordingly.

✅ 3. Helping improve movement, balance, and gait
Difficulty initiating movement, sometimes called “freezing” or a “sticky foot,” is a common challenge for many people with Parkinson’s. We use functional movement assessments and muscle testing to evaluate muscle activation and help support more coordinated movement and balance during treatment.

Every person with Parkinson’s is different. That’s why every treatment plan is personalized. Our goal is to help you move more comfortably, reduce pain and stiffness, and support your daily activities as part of your overall care plan.

If you or someone you love is living with Parkinson’s disease and is looking for a personalized, hands-on approach focused on comfort and mobility, we’d be honored to help.

Massage therapy is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease and should be used as part of a comprehensive care plan in consultation with your healthcare providers.

The Iliopsoas (often called “psoas”) — your deep hip flexor

The iliopsoas is actually two muscles working as one:
• Psoas major – runs from your lower spine (lumbar vertebrae)
• Iliacus – sits inside your pelvis
👉 They join together and attach to the top of your thigh bone (femur)

🔑 What it does (and why it matters)

This muscle is your primary hip flexor, meaning it:
• Lifts your leg up (walking, climbing stairs)
• Helps you get into a car
• Lets you raise your leg to put on pants
• Stabilizes your spine and pelvis when you stand or move

👉 Every step you take depends on it firing correctly.

⚠️ How it causes lower back pain

Because the psoas connects directly to your lumbar spine, it has a huge influence on your back.

When it becomes:
• Tight
• Shortened (from sitting a lot)
• Overworked or inflamed

…it can:

1. Pull your spine forward

This creates an excess arch (lordosis) in your lower back → compression → pain

2. Create constant tension on the lumbar discs

👉 Can contribute to disc irritation, sciatic symptoms, or chronic low back pain

3. Shut down glutes and core

When psoas is overactive, your body stops using:
• Glutes (hip stability)
• Deep core (spinal support)

👉 This imbalance leads to compensation and pain patterns

🚗 Why it’s hard to lift your leg

If your iliopsoas is tight, weak, or inhibited:

You may notice:
• Struggling to lift your leg into your car
• Difficulty putting on pants standing up
• Feeling like your leg is “heavy” or won’t come up smoothly
• Pain in the front of the hip or deep in the low back

👉 That’s because the iliopsoas is the muscle responsible for initiating that lift

If it’s not working right:
• Other muscles try to compensate (hip flexor group, low back)
• Movement becomes painful, stiff, or weak

🔥 Common signs your psoas is the problem
• Tightness deep in the front of the hip
• Lower back pain that doesn’t improve with basic massage
• Pain when standing up straight after sitting
• One side feels weaker when lifting your leg
• You feel better when slightly bent forward

🧠 Why most treatments miss it

Most massage therapists:
• Don’t go deep enough
• Avoid the anterior hip/abdominal area
• Only treat the back (where the pain shows up)

👉 But the cause is often in the front (iliopsoas)

💡 How it should be treated (what actually works)

Effective work usually includes:
• Targeted iliopsoas release (skilled, specific work)
• Active isolated stretching
• Muscle activation (to restore balance)
• Addressing hip + lumbar relationship

Bottom line

The iliopsoas is one of the most important—and most overlooked—muscles in the body.

👉 If it’s tight or dysfunctional:
• Your lower back will suffer
• Your movement will feel restricted
• Simple things like getting dressed or in a car become difficult

Shin Splints Slowing Your Athlete Down? Read This.

Parents in Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and York County — shin splints can quietly derail a season for soccer and baseball athletes.

Pain when running.
Pain when squatting.
Pain when kicking.

Most athletes try to “push through it”… and it only gets worse.

At Ricky Prevatte Massage, we don’t guess — we test.

Using specific muscle testing, we identify why the shin splints are happening in the first place — often coming from dysfunction in the foot, ankle, and hip within the kinetic chain.

Then we go to work using proven techniques:
✔ G5 percussion to stimulate and reduce inflammation
✔ Pin & stretch to restore muscle length and function
✔ Muscle activation to get muscles firing correctly
✔ Cupping & scraping to break up restrictions
✔ Sports taping for support and faster recovery

The goal?
Get your athlete back to running, squatting, and kicking with confidence — and performing at their highest level.

⚾⚽ Don’t let shin splints cost your athlete playing time… or opportunity.
