🛑 Hyperbaric Safety: Why "Static Grounding" is Physics, Not a Checklist 🛑

Most operators know a chamber needs a ground strap. But ask how to prove it works, and you get blank stares. In an O2-rich environment, a loose wire isn't a compliance issue—it’s a spark hazard.

1. The Physics of Equalization

We aren't just protecting against an equipment short. The enemy is electrostatic discharge (ESD).

GAS FLOW and PATIENT MOVEMENT cause triboelectric charging. Electrons strip away and pile up. If your patient and chamber aren't perfectly bonded to earth, they act as a capacitors, storing static until it finds a path of least resistance—like a spark jumping an internal seal. Grounding ensures the chamber, patient, and building sit at exactly 0V potential. No differential = no spark.

2. Tools: Ditch the Cheap Multimeter

You cannot test a life-safety ground with a $20 hardware store meter. You need specialized gear to measure low ohms (Ω) under a true current load:

Digital Low-Resistance Ohmmeter (DLRO): Passes 1A to 10A through the path to measure true resistance, bypassing surface oxidation.

Megohmmeter (Megger): Tests the isolation of components that shouldn't be grounded.

3. The Safe Test Levels (NFPA 99)

Continuity isn't a yes/no question. It’s a math question. When testing from hull to the facility grounding bus bar:

The Gold Standard: Resistance must be < 0.1 Ω.

The Failure Point: >1.0 Ω is an immediate fail (indicates corrosion or loose lugs).

Conductive Floors/Mats: Should measure 10⁶ to 10⁹ Ω—conductive enough to bleed static, but resistive enough to prevent electrocution if a live wire shorts.
