MCIL and ADA Minnesota is proud to support the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 36th Anniversary. On July 26th we celebrated this important civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

Happy 36th anniversary to the Americans with Disabilities Act! Don’t forget to register for our upcoming webinar, where we will join regional ADA Centers and the ADA Knowledge Translation Center in celebrating two significant milestones: the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the 35th anniversary of the ADA National Network, which includes the Great Lakes ADA Center.

The mission of the ADA National Network is to increase awareness and knowledge of the ADA, with the ultimate goal of promoting voluntary compliance with the law. This mission is achieved through customized training, technical assistance, research, and the development and dissemination of informational resources.

During this two-hour webinar, each of the 10 regional ADA Centers will highlight how they support this mission and the impact their work has had in promoting voluntary compliance and ADA education.

Participants will learn more about the resources and initiatives available in their region and how we can continue working together to create a more accessible future.

The State of Minnesota is in the process of drafting a revised Olmstead Plan.

As a part of the State’s Public Comment Process, Metropolitan Center for Independent Living/ADA Minnesota submitted its analysis and concerns about the Draft Plan’s sections on Employment and on Education.

Today, June 22nd, ADA Minnesota recognizes the 27th Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead v. L.C. and E.W.

This precedential decision was premised on the Americans with Disabilities Act, and held that people with disabilities must be placed in “community settings rather than in institutions when the State's treatment professionals have determined that community placement is appropriate, the transfer from institutional care to a less restrictive setting is not opposed by the affected individual, and the placement can be reasonably accommodated, taking into account the resources available to the State and the needs of others.”

This free, virtual Brown Bag Lunch event will bring together nationally recognized experts on compliance and implementation of Title I in the workplace.

The event will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. and will provide practical tools and real-world solutions to ensure employee inclusion and equity.

Title I ADA Coordinators, Human Resources accommodations personnel, college and university ADA coordinators, managers and supervisors, union stewards, and employees with disabilities concerned about employment rights are all encouraged to participate in this free, virtual event.

The Great Lakes ADA Center invites you to register for the upcoming Arts-n-Rec session titled “The Art of Accessibility: Implementing the ADA in Cultural Spaces,” featuring staff from Open Door Arts! This free Zoom webinar will take place on Thursday, December 11 at 1:00.

Arts, culture, and civic spaces are vibrant community anchors, but accessibility needs in these venues are often complex and unique. Many organizations want to understand their ADA obligations but lack tools tailored for theaters, museums, historic sites, and public spaces. This session introduces the Arts & Culture Accessibility Hub’s free tools to understand ADA requirements, plus a clear cycle—assess, plan, connect, learn, implement—to turn intention into action. Participants will leave with practical steps to meet compliance and strengthen accessibility beyond the ADA.
