One of the most important and overlooked aspects of medical care at sporting events is the communication between medical professionals and the injured athletes. 🏃 🏥

When dealing with injuries, our EMTs focus on explaining what they’re seeing, what steps are being taken, and what happens next. That helps reduce confusion, keeps the environment more controlled, and allows athletes and families to feel supported during stressful situations.

Meet the Medic | Jac

This is Jac, one of the EMTs representing Smith EMS at events across Minnesota.

For Jac, the most meaningful part of the role is being able to ease the pain and anxiety of the athletes and families he cares for, helping create a more controlled and supportive environment during stressful moments.

Looking ahead, Jac plans to pursue a family practice residency, continuing to build on his experience in patient care and communication.

How does covering Flag Football as an EMT differ from other sports? 🏈☀️

Flag Football brings a very fast-paced environment for all athletes. Without pads or protective shells, players are exposed to more direct falls, collisions, and awkward movements throughout the game. Fatigue also becomes a major factor, especially during tournaments and long days in the heat. As games stack up, quick cuts, sprinting, and nonstop movement can take a toll on athletes.

It's important our EMTs constantly move about and continually scan the fields for quick response when something happens.

No matter the sport or setting, our standards always remain high. 💯

We’re excited to welcome Monique to Smith EMS as a Sports Medic.

Monique is a Certified EMT currently in paramedic school, building on her experience in healthcare and continuing to grow as a provider. She also brings a strong background as a Nursing Assistant, with hands-on patient care experience.  

She joined Smith EMS because she loves sports.

Her favorite part of the job?

Multiple days, multiple sports, multiple locations across the Twin Cities 🏅

From May 10–17, our team was clocked in and locked in; supporting athletes, coaches, and event staff across multiple venues and sports. From quick evaluations to responding when needed, our medics continually made a visible difference throughout the week at each and every event.

We had:
• 70 hours worked ⛑️
• 5 different sports covered 🏀🏈🏉🏃‍♀️⚽
• 7 medics staffed 🚑

Good coverage is more than just having someone on-site. It’s about being engaged, communicating clearly, and helping events run smoother from start to finish.

We look ahead to another great week of sports coverage!

Meet the Medic | Steve

This is Steve, one of the EMTs representing Smith EMS at events across Minnesota.

For Steve, one of the biggest advantages of working with Smith EMS is the flexibility, being able to easily pick up shifts and control his schedule while staying active in the field.

Outside of events, he enjoys spending his time outdoors any way he can, making the most of Minnesota year-round.

Another busy week in the books 🏒🏐🏈

From May 4–May 11, Smith EMS was stationed all across the metro, supporting multiple hockey tournaments, high school volleyball, as well as regular and flag football, bringing constant visible coverage throughout each event.

This past week we had:
• 17 medics staffed
• 266 coverage hours
• 11 locations covered

Strong event coverage goes beyond simply being on-site. Our EMTs stay engaged and maintain a visible presence so they can respond quickly when athletes need support.

Proud of the professionalism and consistency our team brought to every event this week!
