Self-Care During an Emotional Trigger
We all have things that trigger us. For me, it is always relationships.
I had a relationship painfully end a couple of years ago, and this week I experienced something that brought all that pain rushing back again. The pain I felt was completely out of proportion to the situation. Nonetheless, there it was.
So how do you self-care when your rationality goes out the window and your entire being feels like one big painful wound?
Old me would have gone on one severe chocolate binge (okay, I did a little over-indulging on Reese’s Cups), sought out reassurance and affirmation wherever I could find it, acted out on people who had nothing to do with the situation, and fully indulged in self-flagellation.
What I actually did was different.
I judiciously chose to share with only a couple of loved ones that I was struggling. I engaged in my reflective writing to get all my thoughts and emotions out, and then faced and examined each of them one by one. I set boundaries around the situation. I performed my regular self-care activities—getting enough sleep, exercising, doing yoga. I kept a handle on the irrational thoughts that popped up.
And otherwise, I just felt the feelings.
I am not going to lie. Liquid wanted to leak out of my eyes all day at work, but I kept it together.
Then the weirdest thing happened.
The storm… just… passed.
Yep.
After all that painful intensity that felt like a tornado raging around me and threatening to spiral me into oblivion, I woke up on Friday morning feeling… okay.
Calm.
Peaceful, even.
No one was more astonished than me.
The situation hadn't magically changed. I hadn't gotten some grand resolution or the reassurance I thought I needed. I had simply allowed myself to feel what I was feeling without letting those feelings run the show.
And then, eventually, they passed.
These practices work.
