If your mom is caring for your dad with dementia at home, and she's the one who ends up in the hospital next week, what happens then?

Most adult children have never thought it through. That's not a failure. Nobody tells you to plan for the caregiver.

We hire attorneys for legal questions and advisors for financial guidance without hesitating. Aging deserves that same respect and consideration. Getting guidance early means you're choosing calmly, with real options, instead of saying yes at midnight because it's the only thing offered.

You can start this conversation before you need it.

Ask most people what they want for their graduation party, wedding day, baby shower or birthday party and a conversation flows with ideas and excitement . 🤍

Ask what they want for their final chapter and the room goes quiet. Someone laughs it off. Someone says “I don’t want to think about that” or “we have plenty of time to talk about that.”

Aging and end of life remain taboo topics in our society, and the silence costs us. Every question we leave unanswered gets handed to our children or close family members, who are often left stressed, overwhelmed and unprepared.

Let’s change that. Let’s normalize having these discussions early. Say what you want while it is still yours to say.

Have your parents ever purchased long-term care insurance, felt relieved it was in place when the time came to use it, and then got blind sided by a denial?

Here is a scenario I have witnessed on more than once occasion. An adult daughter recognizes that her mom needs more assistance and cannot safely manage at home. She received a dementia diagnosis, but still handles most of her activities of daily living independently. Her daughter makes the difficult decision to relocate her mom, sure the policy will start making payments after she moves her. She sells her mom‘s house and downsizes all of her possessions, other than the items to go with her to the new assisted living facility. She gets her settled in and begins submitting the claims for reimbursement.

For six months, the insurance company makes the payments and then all of a sudden they decide to do a reassessment. At this time, they determine that her mom no longer meets the requirements of the policy and abruptly stop paying…

Has this happened in your family? I would truly love to hear. 💬

Aging in place is a hot topic these days as the Boomers are getting older and want to stay in control of their journeys.

The perfect trifecta of professionals to help you “Age in place” includes an estate planning attorney like Vaughn Law, PLLC, a financial advisor/planner, and an aging life care manager. This team helps you plan for the legal, financial, and practical aspects of aging.

"Aging in place" sounds simple. The planning behind it usually isn't. 🏡

Staying in your own home as you age can mean home modifications, in-home care arrangements, and sometimes tough conversations about when a change might be needed.

The families who plan ahead tend to have a lot more options — and a lot less stress — when the time comes.

👉 Reach out to our team today to talk through what aging in place could look like for your family.

You know your mom better than any chart ever could. 💙

You know how she takes her coffee, that she lights up when the grandkids call, that she would rather be home in her own chair than anywhere else in the world. In a hospital room, moving from one team to the next, so much of that gets lost. The people caring for her are kind and capable, yet they are meeting a patient, not the woman you have loved your whole life.

That is the space we step into. We carry everything in the chart AND the pieces that are left out, the who-she-is underneath it all, so the plan built around her actually fits her life and not just her chart. We ask the questions you don’t know to ask, we advocate when something is not right, and we identify the paths and resources that are not always included on a discharge plan.

You should not have to become an expert in a system this hard while trying to simply be her child. Let us carry that part. You go back to loving her. 💙

Aging life care management is not the easiest profession to explain in a few words… we are not just care coordinators or advocates… we are the glue that holds the fragmented pieces of our aging services and healthcare system together.

👩‍⚕️We are the professionals that advocate for your mom in the hospital room when the the physician starts throwing out terms and diagnoses that you do not understand or the discharge planner that is handing you a list of local rehab facilities and asking you to make a choice without understanding the options.

💔We console the grieving husband who lost his wife of 50 years and is being asked to move into an assisted living facility by his well-meaning adult children who are overwhelmed and barely holding it together.

We are the ones holding the whole picture together…

🧭We are guided by the Aging Life Care Associations code of ethics and standards of practice that are the highest in the aging industry!

When caregiving becomes overwhelming, these professionals can help families navigate the maze of medical services and difficult care decisions

Why “A Silver Lining”?

A silver lining is the bit of hope you find inside a scary and overwhelming moment.

Aging can feel like a building storm. Failing memory, complex healthcare scenarios, end of life decisions, and families trying to figure it all. It can feel like watching the dark clouds rolling in…

Here in Florida, we know storms. The families who come through best are the ones who got ready before the storm hits.

Aging is the same. As Aging Life Care Managers®, we help you prepare before the crisis, and stand beside you when one comes. That readiness, and that peace, is the silver lining. 💛
