According to Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer’s framework, a separation conflict occurs when someone experiences an unexpected, deeply distressing loss of contact with a loved one—or wishes to separate from unwanted contact. He interpreted this as a biological experience of being “torn away.” In his theory, when this conflict is associated with the scalp, hair loss can appear during the conflict-active phase, particularly in patches where contact is missed or separation is felt. He described changes in the scalp’s superficial skin and reduced sensitivity as the body’s attempt to lessen the sensation of separation; after conflict resolution, his framework predicts skin repair and eventual hair regrowth.

A trichologist can use auricular observation as a noninvasive assessment tool—not to diagnose disease, but to gather clues that guide better questions about factors influencing the hair and scalp.

During consultation, observe both ears for:

* Redness or unusual color changes
* Dryness, scaling, or flaking
* Puffiness, swelling, or depressions
* Dark spots or hyperpigmentation
* Prominent blood vessels
* Bumps, creases, scars, or changes in texture
* Differences between the right and left ear.
This benefits the trichologist by helping them:

* Conduct a more organized and comprehensive consultation.
* Identify lifestyle or wellness topics that may deserve further investigation.
* Compare auricular observations with scalp images, shedding history, nutrition, medications, stress, and laboratory information.
* Establish a visual baseline and document changes during follow-up visits.
* Improve client awareness by showing that hair loss may involve several interconnected influences.
