The Monthly Dose: Medication Adherence 💊

Taking medication as prescribed is a critical part of managing chronic conditions, but medication nonadherence remains a significant challenge across the healthcare system.
According to the CDC, about 50% of medications for chronic diseases are not taken as prescribed. Earlier CDC research also found that approximately 1 in 5 new prescriptions are never filled, while roughly half of filled prescriptions are taken incorrectly, including issues with timing, dosage, frequency, or duration.

The impact extends beyond the prescription itself. The American Heart Association estimates that poor medication adherence contributes to approximately 125,000 deaths each year and as much as $300 billion in additional U.S. healthcare costs annually.

Cost, side effects, complex treatment plans, access, and other barriers can all make it harder for people to stay on track. For employers, health plans, and the broader healthcare industry, improving adherence means looking beyond whether a medication was prescribed and understanding what may prevent someone from taking it as intended.

How can we make it easier for people to stay on track with their medications?

International Overdose Awareness Day 💜

International Overdose Awareness Day is a time to remember those we've lost, support those affected, and help break the stigma surrounding substance use disorders.

Education, open conversations, and access to treatment and recovery resources can make a meaningful difference. By increasing awareness and supporting one another, we can help build healthier, more informed communities.

Together, we can replace stigma with compassion and hope.

Looking Back. Moving Forward. ♀️

Progress doesn't always happen all at once. It's built through the people who speak up, advocate for change, and create opportunities for future generations.

This Women's Equality Day, we're taking a moment to recognize the achievements that have helped shape a more equitable future and the work that continues to move us forward.

Team Spotlight🐢

Giving back doesn't always happen in the office.
This month, we're recognizing Michelle Forkheim, one of our Client Services Directors, for volunteering at the Sea Turtle Hatchling Release on Malaquite Beach at Padre Island National Seashore. Alongside fellow volunteers, Michelle helped release more than 100 sea turtle hatchlings into the Gulf, supporting conservation efforts that protect Texas' coastal wildlife.

We're proud to celebrate team members who make a difference in their communities and bring the PCA Rx spirit of care into everything they do.

Thank you, Michelle, for representing the heart of PCA Rx.

National Wellness Month🧘‍♀️

August is National Wellness Month, reminding us that wellness isn't one-size-fits-all.

For some, it's exercise and nutritious meals. For others, it's protecting your peace, unplugging from technology, making time for preventive care, or reconnecting with the people and activities that help you recharge.

However wellness looks for you, every small step counts.

The Monthly Dose: Access to Care

Access to quality healthcare remains one of the biggest drivers of better health outcomes. While conversations often focus on treatment, access to preventive care, routine screenings, and affordable services can make an even greater impact over time.

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), more than 32.4 million people received care through HRSA-funded health centers in 2024. Nearly 90% of those patients had incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, highlighting the critical role these centers play in expanding access to care.

As healthcare continues to evolve, improving access means more than opening doors. It means helping people receive the right care, at the right time, without unnecessary barriers.

How can healthcare organizations continue making quality care more accessible for everyone?
