If you're going through chemo and finding that your fingers or toes are suddenly tingling in an annoying way, or it feels like you're stepping on a golf ball when you put your foot down, you may be experiencing chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). It's one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy, and often dose reduction is the only tool available for reducing the risk of long-term challenges.

Acupuncture is one of the most effective ways to manage (CIPN), and there's data to prove that it performs as well or better than commonly prescribed medications without the side effects.

If you're in the San Diego area and going through chemo, reach out for a free discovery call and let's chat about whether I can help!

Backwards print (thanks, selfie-mode😛) on a draft copy, but too excited to wait for a better photo. First time seeing my book in print!!!!

Manuscript is with my editor for a final pass through and there's still some formatting to be finished, but we're getting close. Release is scheduled for August 19 and I can't wait to have a truly finished copy in my hands!!

No matter what cancer they have, my patients come in with the same questions. Why me? What could I have done differently? Will I survive? Will the treatment kill me faster than the disease?

Spoiler alert - while lifestyle factors play a role in whether or not a person gets cancer, they are not the ONLY factor. You are NOT responsible for your diagnosis. Chances are good that there was nothing you could have done to prevent your diagnosis.

Will you survive? Nobody knows for sure, but the odds get better and better every year.

Cancer treatment doesn't just affect the tumor. Every cell in your body can feel the effects. Nausea, neuropathy, upset stomach, anxiety, skin rashes, fear of recurrence, sleepless nights, body aches - it's all part of the process. And all these symptoms don't immediatley go away once the treatment is over.

You're not crazy, you're not "high maintenance", and you don't have to go through it alone.

June is PTSD Awareness Month. PTSD can show up in surprising ways, and acupuncture can help a lot with managing symptoms. Send this to a friend who's struggling after cancer treatment!

When was the last time you rode a bicycle? Do you remember feeling the joy of getting somewhere under your own power? Feeling the wind in your face and the strength of your legs? As a child in the 70s, a bike was FREEDOM. It meant going to the local pool without needing a ride. Visiting friends. Going to and from school on your own schedule. As an adult, pedaling a bike brings me back to the pleasure of a simpler time when a schedule means nothing, and the journey means everything.

Whether you ride to the coffee shop down the street or hundreds of miles, there's truly nothing like riding a bike.

The picture is me, about 3years ago, on a bucket-list ride while visiting family in Grand Junction, CO. I pedaled my mother-in-law's bike from their home, up into the Colorado National Monument, following Rim Rock Road through the park and down the other side. 53 miles and over 5000 feet of climbing, with spectacular views of the iconic canyon from the top.

The first time I rode this route, I was 10 years younger, and in peak condition. This time, I was post-cancer, chubbier than usual, a lot slower on the uphills and more cautions on the descents. But I did it! Yes, I was tired at the end. And yes, I'd do it again.

Where will you pedal today?

‼️News flash ‼️Hormonal changes can affect your MOOD‼️

Yes, it's true. Starting new birth control. Pregnancy. Perimenopause. Menopause. Hormone blocking medications during cancer treatment. Too much stress. All of these life events can lead to mood swings, irritability, crying easily, feeling like you're losing your mind. And yes, changes to testosterone levels can affect men just like changes to estrogen and progesterone affect women.

Mental health concerns aren't always "just" in the emotions. Sometimes, physical shifts lead to mood changes which can be every bit as challenging as dealing with emotional trauma.

You're not crazy, and you don't necessarily need to start antidepressants. (In fact, there's a movement to prescribe fewer of these!) But you might need to switch birth control prescriptions, consider hormone replacement, work on stress management, or get some acupuncture and Chinese herbs to start feeling like yourself again.

Feeling a little cuckoo? Hit me up for a consultation and let's see if we can get you back on track. Call or text (619)772-4002 to schedule your free discovery call, or, if you're already a patient, to book your next visit!

Memorial Day.

It's not JUST about barbeques with your family and a long weekend.

May the families of those who have given their lives in service find solace in their memories, and may the men and women who have served and not returned rest in peace.

Mental distress isn’t always visible.

Many people carry silent battles with anxiety, grief, or trauma. A day to day burden they never get to put down, and you never really see. When that person in front of you is slower than you want, stumbling over words, not quite performing up to your standards, it's time for a little bit of grace. You have no idea what that person is carrying, what struggles they're having, how your harsh words will land for someone barely holding it together.

And maybe it's YOU who is struggling. Wouldn't you want the people you encounter to offer kindness rather than anger or disdain?

Please remember that a little kindness can go a long way.
