This is one of my favourite myo-fascial releases for the upper chest and front of the shoulders. I place the ball into the soft tissue just below the collarbone / inside the front of the shoulder, support myself on the block, and slowly allow some weight to settle into it. Physically, I use this to explore tension through the pec and surrounding fascia - especially after lots screen time or those days where I realise my shoulders have been creeping forwards for hours.
This area sits along the Lung meridian which begins in the upper chest and travels down the inner arm. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Lung system is traditionally associated with grief, sadness, the breath and the ability to let go.
Gentle pressure around this upper-chest area is used to help open feelings of constriction through the chest and encourage the breath to move more freely
- physically creating space in an area that can feel guarded when we’re stressed or grieving.
Avoid pressing directly onto bone or breast tissue, and come away if anything feels sharp, nervy, numb or tingly.
Save this one for the next time your chest and shoulders feel like they’re carrying the whole day.
