The Greenhouse Project A vibrant community greenhouse. As a public charity, our programs benefit education, nutrition, and local hunger projects. We operate a 3000 sq. ft.

Hosting classes, education, wellness events, growing organic food plants, supporting community Gardens, and hunger, initiatives, and flower sales in Nay Aug Park, Scranton PA. Since 2002 - growing a sustainable community through education, wholesome food, and healthy active living.The Greenhouse Project’s focus is to educate both children and adults about the relationship between the foods we eat

and our personal and public health. Guided walk: "Multitudes of Sassafras Saplings” Wed. 10AM at Ed Staback Memorial Park in Archbald, PA to discover and learn about sassafras with naturalists Jane and Rob. August 12th

Discover the Amazing Sassafras Tree

Join us on a hike to search for Sassafras (Sassafras albidum), a fascinating native tree with a surprisingly colorful history.

Sassafras is easy to recognize by its wonderfully aromatic leaves, which come in three shapes—including the famous “mitten” leaf. In fall, the leaves turn beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and red. Crush a leaf and you’ll notice a fragrance reminiscent of orange and vanilla.

Long before modern medicine, sassafras was considered a “miracle cure” and became one of the most important early medicinal plants exported from North America to Europe. Native peoples used it for many traditional purposes, and its distinctive flavor later found its way into tea, cooking, candy, and the original flavoring of root beer. It is also known to be toxic to liver.

Come along, find this special tree, and discover the fascinating stories, traditions, and natural history behind it!

Wednesday, August 12, STABACK PARK, Archbald, 1 mile easy. “Multitudes of Sassafras Saplings” Out under the trees on a hot summer’s day can be relaxing as we walk this little loop through the understory.

We stroll slowly and intentionally take in the flora that surrounds us. Jane and Rob are both a wealth of knowledge so Q&A is encouraged!

Directions: From Route 81 in Scranton, take the Casey Highway new Route 6 East to Exit 5, Jermyn. Turn left at end of exit ramp and go to traffic light on Washington Avenue. Turn left on Washington and go straight (there will be a fork to the left in a couple of blocks – do not take it) 2.9 miles to Staback Park (Archbald Regional Park) on right. Go to second parking lot on the right. Port-a-lav in parking lot.
