It’s time to introduce you to one of your new favorite University of Washington Plastic Surgery faces — Payton Grande!!

Payton grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and began college at Emory University before transferring to Boston College, where she graduated with degrees in Biology and Women’s & Gender Studies. She then headed back home for medical school at the University of Tennessee and spent a research year at Stanford with the CARE Plastic Surgery program. She is especially interested in general pediatric Plastic Surgery and pediatric craniofacial surgery, and is excited to explore these interests during her time at UW.

When it came time to choose a residency program, UW stood out for the people. During her interview, Payton had so much fun and felt genuinely seen by the residents and faculty. She was looking for a place that would push her to become an excellent surgeon while also helping her grow as a whole person, and found that at UW. The incredible diversity of patients and cases and strong emphasis on teaching only made the decision easier.

Outside the hospital, Payton is usually reading a mystery thriller, watching reality TV, doing yoga, painting, or finding any excuse to be in the water. She’s also a die-hard basketball fan (go Grizzlies, go Vols!) and a two-time fantasy basketball champion, so consider this your warning before draft season. 🏀🏆

We’re so excited to have Payton here for the next six years and can’t wait to see all that she does!

We are proud to announce the Dr. Seenu Susarla has been inducted into the Robert H. Ivy League for his contributions of over 700 peer reviews in PRS. His contributions to our specialty are vast from mentorship, education, and scholarly work. We thank him for his continued dedication to strengthening PRS and training the next generation of plastic and craniofacial surgeons.

Shanique, Brandon, Editt, Giulia, & Lindsey we are so immensely proud of you and cannot wait to watch you take the world by storm. Your compassion, clinical excellence, and graceful leadership does not go unnoticed. 💜

We didn’t let the chiefs off the hook 🪝 as the rising chief class UW PRS R5s hosted our second annual Chief Roast🔥 and let’s just say SSD and xero/baci were on standby.

While this week will end the academic year, this is not a goodbye but see you later. You will always your UW family cheering you on 💜💛

Big congratulations are in order for Dr. Susarla and Dr. Ettinger following the publication of Management of Cleft Lip and Palate, a comprehensive textbook covering cleft management and care from infancy through skeletal maturity with a particular focus on multidisciplinary care and areas of emerging research.

🔦Attending research spotlight🔦

Dr. Christopher Crowe was recently invited to speak at the 6th International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb in Dublin, Ireland, 🇮🇪 where he presented on the standardized examination of the spastic upper limb and principles of surgical decision making 🪡. The symposium brings together international leaders in the field to share advances and innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of spasticity following upper motor neuron injury.

Over the past several years, there have been significant advances in the surgical treatment of spasticity following stroke, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury. 🧠 These evolving treatment approaches have helped shape the development of the University of Washington’s Multidisciplinary Spasticity Surgery Clinic, which Dr. Crowe directs. The clinic’s mission is to provide coordinated, comprehensive care for patients throughout the region affected by upper and lower extremity spasticity and contractures.

We had so much fun at our second annual UW Plastic Surgery camping trip! We visited the beautiful Lake Wenatchee State Park and enjoyed playing by the lake, hiking, and cooking by the fire. Happy belated Memorial Day Weekend, everyone! 🛶🏕️🌄

Our Emeritus Chief of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Vedder, is making the most of his well-deserved retirement—and we love that he’s still taking the time to bring our residents out to the ballpark. This weekend, our UW Plastic Surgery residents and fellow headed down to Austin, TX, for an incredible educational experience at the course focused on current trends and clinical perspectives in orthognathic surgery!

We are especially proud that this comprehensive course was co-chaired by our very own Dr. Susarla, Chief of Plastic Surgery at Seattle Children’s. Representing UW and expanding their expertise were our craniofacial fellow, Dr. Solomon Lee, alongside residents Drs. Editt Taslakian, Lindsey Teal, Daniella Cordero, Thais Calderon, and Ryan Badiee.

The team learned directly from international experts in the field, then got their hands dirty refining their techniques in the dry lab. Another major highlight of the event was a fantastic presentation by course faculty and former UW faculty member, Dr. Hopper, who delivered an insightful talk on the critical role of multi-functional craniofacial care teams.

Continuous learning and collaboration are at the core of our program. We love taking advantage of these opportunities to bring the best possible care back to our patients!
