Lies we tell ourselves:

It will never get better.

This is just how I am.

My life will never be good again.

God won’t forgive me.

I can’t forgive them.

I can’t forgive myself.

I won’t be able to get over this.

You can’t trust anyone.

God doesn’t care.

The danger is that lies don’t just pass through our thoughts. Lies ravage our beliefs.

A lie we believe becomes a limitation that steals possibility. That limitation then becomes a resignation of defeat preventing us from moving forward and moving on.

I’ve learned to listen for these defeating lies. And then reject those thoughts with immediate prayers, “God, help me untangle this lie from my thoughts and replace it with Your life-giving Truth. This lie is damaging and defeating so I will not allow it to hijack my mind or hinder my heart. With Your powerful Truth in me, I am set free.”

Good stuff right here!

Judges 21 Devotional: Don’t Let Your Pain Make Your Decisions

We are reading our Bible together corporately every morning. We have read Proverbs. John. Acts. Romans. Luke. Ephesians. James. Hebrews. 1 Peter. Joshua. Now Judges. Now on to Ruth

Judges 21 is the final chapter of Judges—and whew! It ends exactly how this whole book has been going: MESSY.
The big lesson of Judges isn’t, “Look how terrible these people were.” It’s:
Look what happens when everybody starts doing whatever feels right to them instead of following God.

Judges 21:25 (NLT): “In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.”

That verse sums up the entire book.
What’s happening?

After the horrific events of Judges 19, Israel went to war against the tribe of Benjamin. By the end of Judges 20, Benjamin was nearly wiped out.
Then Israel realized:
“Wait… we just almost destroyed one of our own tribes.”

Now they’re grieving over something their own anger helped create.
They had made an oath that they wouldn’t allow their daughters to marry Benjaminite men. But now they’re worried Benjamin won’t survive because there aren’t enough women for the remaining men to marry.
So instead of stopping and seeking God for wisdom, they create another terrible solution to fix the consequences of their previous terrible decisions.
That’s Judges 21.
Lesson 1: You can be right about the problem and wrong about your response.

Israel had every reason to be horrified by what happened in Benjamin.
But righteous anger without wisdom can still produce unrighteous decisions.
Sometimes we think:
“But I had a RIGHT to be angry!”

Maybe you did.
But having a right to be angry doesn’t give you permission to destroy everything around you.
Don’t let somebody else’s dysfunction turn you dysfunctional.

Your response still belongs to you.

Lesson 2: Stop making permanent decisions in temporary emotions.

Israel made vows while emotions were high.
Then later they realized:
“Uh-oh. We didn’t think this through.” That’ll preach.

Some decisions feel brilliant when you’re hurt.
“I’m never speaking to them again.”
“I’m quitting.”
“I’m done with everybody.”
“I’ll never trust again.”
“I’ll never love again.”
Then six months later, you’re trying to figure out how to undo something you decided while bleeding.
Savage truth: Never give a temporary emotion permanent authority over your life.

Heal first.
Pray first.
Cool down first.
Then decide.
Lesson 3: Stop creating another mess trying to fix the first mess.

This is probably the wildest part of Judges 21.
Israel has a problem created by bad decisions, and instead of seeking God’s direction, they start manufacturing loopholes.
One compromise required another compromise.
One bad decision required another bad decision.
One mess needed another mess to cover it.
Sound familiar?

A lie requires another lie.
Debt creates more debt.
A toxic relationship creates another rebound relationship.
One bad business decision creates five desperate decisions.
Sometimes the answer isn’t:
“How do I make this work?”

Sometimes the answer is:
“God, show me where I got out of alignment.”

Because you cannot heal dysfunction by becoming more dysfunctional.

Lesson 4: Just because it makes sense to YOU doesn’t mean it came from GOD.

Judges 21:25 is the mic drop:
Everybody did what seemed right in their own eyes.

Notice it doesn’t say they were intentionally trying to destroy themselves.
They were doing what seemed right.
That’s dangerous.

Everything that feels right isn’t right.
Everything that makes sense isn’t wisdom.
Every open door isn’t God.
Every relationship you want isn’t God.
Every opportunity isn’t God.
Every clapback you could justify isn’t God.
Sometimes maturity sounds like:
“I know what I WANT to do, but God, what do YOU want me to do?”

Lesson 5: A life without godly leadership eventually becomes chaotic.

The repeated statement throughout Judges is:
“Israel had no king.”

Spiritually, the problem was bigger than the absence of a human king.
They had stopped allowing God to rule them.
They wanted God’s protection without God’s direction.
God’s blessings without God’s boundaries.
God’s promises without God’s principles.
And eventually everybody became their own authority.
That is a recipe for chaos.

THE BIG TAKEAWAY

Judges starts with Israel entering territory God gave them.
It ends with Israel nearly destroying itself.
Their biggest enemy wasn’t always outside the camp.
Sometimes the enemy was their own compromise.
WHEW.

You can defeat external enemies and still sabotage yourself internally.
You can be gifted and undisciplined.
Anointed and unhealed.
Called and stubborn.
Blessed and still making decisions from your emotions.
The goal isn’t just to get the promise. The goal is to become healthy enough to live in it.

Prayer

Father, help me stop doing what seems right to me and start doing what is right according to You. Give me wisdom when I’m emotional, restraint when I’m angry, and discernment when I’m confused. Show me any cycles I keep creating because I refuse to surrender completely to You. I don’t want to keep cleaning up messes that obedience could have prevented. Rule my heart, guide my decisions, and make my life look like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

SAVAGE TRUTH OF JUDGES 21:

Some battles aren’t the devil attacking you. Sometimes it’s the consequences of decisions God never told you to make.

Reflection:

Where in my life have I been doing what “seems right to me” instead of asking God what is right?

Pride is making someone else bleed so you can feel innocent. Think about it.

When God is removed as the center, feelings become the standard 🙌
