Dr. Paul Eck (founder of Analytical Research Labs - ARL) believed that appearing energetic and actually having energy weren’t the same thing.

He observed that some people could appear outgoing, enthusiastic, driven, and full of life while underneath, their energy reserves were becoming increasingly depleted.

As Dr. Eck described it, “Most people who appear to be too energetic are just worked-up and keyed-up.”

Caffeine, constant activity, new projects, relationships, excitement, and stress can provide temporary stimulation—creating what looks and feels like energy without necessarily reflecting the person's underlying vitality.

I knew someone who illustrated this remarkably well. In public, people often commented on their “amazing, positive energy.” Yet in private, they were a completely different person. They were utterly exhausted, with little energy to do much beyond watching TV. Interestingly, they even described their “spirit animal” as a sloth.

They seemed to need a constant source of stimulation—alcohol, relationships, s*x, or online interaction—to feel energized or engaged.

The contrast was striking: the person others experienced as exceptionally energetic was, away from that stimulation, profoundly depleted.

Dr. Eck believed that this increasing need for stimulation is a sign of trying to override exhaustion. He said, “A chronic, pressing desire for stimulants is an important indicator that the person is going into burnout.”
