Every memory has a story. Today we celebrated those stories one memory box at a time.” 💜

Today, our team at Serenity Bay Hospice had the privilege of spending time with the wonderful residents at Overlook Suwanee creating personalized Memory Boxes.

These special boxes are filled with treasured photos, meaningful keepsakes, and memories that tell the unique story of each resident’s life. Memory boxes not only celebrate a person’s journey but also serve as a source of comfort, connection, and conversation for families, caregivers, and loved ones.

It was a joy to see smiles, hear stories, and honor the lives and legacies of these remarkable individuals. Every memory tells a story, and every story deserves to be remembered. 💜

Thank you to the residents and staff at Overlook Suwanee for allowing us to share in such a meaningful experience.

💜 How Hospice Can Make a Difference for Someone Living with Dementia 💜

Dementia is a progressive illness that affects memory, communication, mobility, eating, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. As the disease advances, families often find themselves facing difficult decisions while trying to provide the best possible care for their loved one.

Hospice care can provide comfort, support, and guidance during this journey.

✨ How Hospice Helps Dementia Patients:
• Expert management of pain, anxiety, agitation, and other symptoms
• Support with eating and swallowing challenges
• Assistance with personal care needs and maintaining comfort
• Emotional and spiritual support for patients and families
• Education for caregivers on what to expect as the disease progresses
• Access to nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers
• 24/7 support when questions or concerns arise

Many families wait too long to learn about hospice. Hospice is not about giving up—it is about improving quality of life, preserving dignity, and ensuring that patients remain as comfortable as possible.

If your loved one with dementia is experiencing increased sleeping, weight loss, difficulty communicating, frequent infections, increased falls, or needing more assistance with daily activities, it may be time to have a conversation about hospice care.

At Serenity Bay Hospice, we are honored to walk alongside patients and families, providing compassionate care and support every step of the way.

💜 You don’t have to navigate dementia alone.

🧠 Dementia Safety at Home: Simple Steps That Can Make a Big Difference 🏡

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be both rewarding and challenging. As memory and judgment change, everyday household items and routines can become safety concerns. Here are some simple ways families can create a safer home environment:

✅ Reduce Fall Risks
• Remove loose rugs and clutter from walkways.
• Keep pathways well-lit, especially at night.
• Install grab bars in bathrooms and handrails on stairs.
• Encourage the use of non-slip footwear.

✅ Prevent Wandering
• Install door alarms or chimes.
• Consider placing locks higher or lower than eye level if appropriate.
• Keep a recent photograph available and ensure your loved one carries identification.

✅ Make the Kitchen Safer
• Store sharp objects, cleaning products, and medications in locked cabinets.
• Consider using automatic shut-off devices for stoves.
• Remove expired food from the refrigerator regularly.

✅ Simplify the Environment
• Label drawers, cabinets, and rooms with words or pictures.
• Keep frequently used items in consistent locations.
• Reduce excessive noise and distractions that may cause confusion.

✅ Manage Medications Carefully
• Use a pill organizer or medication dispenser.
• Keep all medications secured and out of reach.
• Maintain an updated medication list.

✅ Prepare for Emergencies
• Post emergency phone numbers in a visible location.
• Create a plan for medical emergencies or severe weather.
• Inform trusted neighbors about your loved one’s condition if appropriate.

❤️ Most importantly, maintain a calm and familiar routine. Consistency can help reduce anxiety, confusion, and agitation for those living with dementia.

If you have questions about caring for a loved one with advanced dementia, Serenity Bay Hospice is here to provide education, support, and compassionate guidance for families every step of the way.

💜 When Should You Consider Hospice for a Loved One with Dementia? 💜

Many families wait too long to learn about hospice care, often believing it is only for the final days of life. In reality, hospice can provide months of support, comfort, education, and guidance for both patients and their families.

For individuals living with advanced dementia, it may be time to explore hospice when you begin noticing signs such as:

✅ Significant weight loss or difficulty eating and drinking
✅ Frequent infections, such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections
✅ Increased sleeping and decreased alertness
✅ Difficulty speaking or communicating needs
✅ Dependence on others for all activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, toileting, eating)
✅ Recurrent falls or declining mobility
✅ Multiple hospitalizations or emergency room visits

Hospice focuses on comfort, dignity, symptom management, emotional support, and helping families navigate this challenging journey.

You do not have to wait until a crisis occurs to ask questions. Having a conversation early can help ensure your loved one receives the care and support they deserve.

💜 At Serenity Bay Hospice, we are here to educate, support, and walk alongside families every step of the way.

🧠 Recognizing the Early Signs of Dementia: When Should You Talk to a Doctor?

As we recognize Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month this June, it’s important to understand that occasional forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging—but some changes may signal something more.

Early signs that may warrant a conversation with your loved one’s doctor include:

🔹 Memory loss that disrupts daily life
🔹 Repeatedly asking the same questions
🔹 Difficulty completing familiar tasks
🔹 Confusion with dates, time, or place
🔹 Trouble finding the right words during conversations
🔹 Misplacing items and being unable to retrace steps
🔹 Changes in mood, personality, or behavior
🔹 Withdrawal from social activities, hobbies, or family gatherings
🔹 Poor judgment or difficulty making decisions

If these symptoms are becoming more frequent or are impacting daily living, it’s important not to ignore them. Early evaluation can help identify the cause, provide access to treatment options, and allow families to plan for the future.

❤️ At Serenity Bay Hospice, we believe that education empowers families. Throughout June, we’ll be sharing information, resources, and support for those caring for loved ones living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Stay tuned for more helpful tips and educational posts throughout the month.
