I became a nurse practitioner in addiction medicine because I watched what untreated substance use does to families — including my own. I saw people who were brilliant, capable, and loved, whose lives were made smaller by something that had a treatment.

I recently wrote something for my kids about what my favorite movies say about me — The Way We Were, Twister, The Accountant, and yes, all the John Wick films.
Turns out the through line in every single one is commitment. To love, to purpose, to identity, to getting back up when life knocks you down.
It got me thinking about why I do this work. Addiction medicine, hormone health, weight loss, primary care — none of it is simple, and none of my patients take the easy road. What I see every single day are people who are committed to something better, even when it is hard and slow and uncertain.

Addiction does not arrive alone.

It arrives with exhaustion. With chronic pain. With a testosterone level nobody has checked in ten years. With sleep that has been broken so long it feels normal.

Most addiction treatment addresses the substance and stops there. My practice does not.

When I see a patient, I am asking about energy, mood, weight, focus, pain, and hormones — not just the presenting problem. Because in my experience, the patients who struggle most with recovery are the ones whose underlying physiology was never addressed.

If you have been treated for addiction before and it did not stick, that is worth looking at.
