We started our morning with a little movement, mindfulness, and creativity!

Before classes started for the day, some of our students enjoyed an early morning yoga session with Dawn, while others spent time creating their own sensory keychains.

Activities like these are more than just a fun way to start the day—they also support important skill acquisition and development. Yoga can help students practice body awareness, balance, coordination, following directions, focus, and self-regulation. Sensory keychain making encourages fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, decision-making, creativity, sequencing, and independence.

The sensory keychains can also become a useful tool students can keep with them to help with regulation, focus, and meeting individual sensory needs throughout the day.

Two important concepts: self-regulation and the power of our mindset!

First, we explored how cold water can provide a strong cooling sensation after our bodies have been hot, active, or our heart rates have increased. Students experienced how something as simple as placing a hand in ice water can help the body begin to calm down, cool off, and feel more regulated.

The second part of the activity focused on the power of the brain! While keeping a hand in the cold water, we practiced talking, smiling, joking, breathing, and focusing our attention on something other than the discomfort.

Students were able to see firsthand how distraction, breathing, attention, and mindset can influence the way we experience discomfort and even help us tolerate it a little longer.

Such a simple activity, but a great hands-on lesson in understanding our bodies, emotions, and coping skills!

James had the opportunity to work on his baking skills while also researching healthier ingredient options!

We love creating opportunities for our students to build practical life skills, explore healthier choices, and take pride in sharing their accomplishments with others.👏

Jake put their skills to work in the kitchen Thursday and made an absolutely delicious lunch for our administration team!

While preparing the meal, Jake worked on time management, learning how to flip food in a pan, and expanding their knowledge of delicious, budget-friendly meals. These are practical skills that help build confidence and independence both in and out of the kitchen.

🍴 On the menu:
• Mini chicken quesadillas
• Rice
• Homemade salsa
• And the tastiest eclair cake for dessert!

Everything was SO good! 😋

We love watching our students learn, grow, and gain confidence through hands-on experiences like this. We are incredibly proud of Jake!

Our students had the opportunity to enjoy an educational trip to the UK Art Museum.
They explored works of art from a variety of different cultures. Students also participated in an interactive scavenger hunt that encouraged observation, teamwork, and critical thinking.
Each student selected their favorite artwork and wrote about what made it meaningful to them. To top off the experience, they learned the proper techniques for hanging artwork for display. Experiences like these help foster creativity, cultural awareness, and lifelong learning.

We are excited to introduce Jo Watson, LPCC-S, our newest provider here at A New Beginning Achievement Center!
Jo brings valuable knowledge, compassion, and dedication to serving our community, and we are so happy to have her join our village.

“Hi, I’m Jo. I’ve worked with children and families for almost 25 years. I began my career working in Protection and Permanency addressing safety, permanency and well-being of the children and families. While working, I returned to college and obtained my Masters degree in Mental Health and Counseling. I completed my clinical and supervision hours becoming an independently licensed clinical counselor. I provided individual counseling to children and collateral counseling to their families, however; for the last 14 years of my career, I returned to providing services to those children experiencing foster care. I started at the entry level as the position was combined as Case Manager and Counselor. I continued to work diligently and earned the Treatment Director position in Somerset. With my team, we grew the division and were the leader in the state for providing services out of six divisions. With growth the business expanded, and I became the Assistant Executive Director leading the Independent Living Program for youth ages 18 to 21. I then earned the position of Associate Executive Director of Kentucky. I was responsible for the clinical aspects of our services. I retired in July 2025.
I’m excited to start the next chapter of my career with A New Beginning Achievement Center as the on-site counselor but also the Supervisor of the Community Support Associates.”
