Obesity is associated with nearly one in five deaths in the United States. It drives type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, and at least thirteen cancers. Severe obesity shortens life expectancy by roughly a decade. And it costs the healthcare system approximately $173 billion each year.
Leading medical organizations classify obesity as a chronic, progressive disease — one shaped by genetics, environment, and physiology, not character.
That reframing matters, because chronic diseases respond to treatment.
