🥾 An Herbalist’s Quick Response on the Trail 🌿

An experience from Master Herbalist, Tara Christopher Eyre:

It’s finally warming up! Our family recently enjoyed a quick trip down to Capitol Reef for some hiking. The scenery was amazing, but toward the end of our first day, I developed bright red, raised welts around my entire waistline.

As herbalists, we are trained to look for the root cause. It wasn't a sunburn or a bug bite. A quick check of my new hiking pants revealed the culprit: they were 100% nylon. (A great reminder of why I usually stick to natural fibers!)

I had found the cause; now I could get to work. Here is exactly what I used from my herbal first-aid kit to soothe the allergic reaction:

✨ Complete Tissue & Bone Ointment: Applied frequently to the welts. This ended up being the most deeply soothing remedy for the pain and itch!
✨ Nettle Tincture: Taken internally and rubbed directly onto the skin to calm the allergic response.
✨ Kid-e-Soothe: Taken internally for extra support.

The combination worked so well that I was able to sleep through the night and comfortably hike six to eight hours a day for the rest of the trip! Within a week of continuing the Complete Tissue & Bone oil at home, my skin was fully healed and back to normal.

I love that as an herbalist, I naturally think about what the body needs, look at what I have on hand, and put it to use. I am so grateful I completed the Master Herbalist program through the School of Natural Healing. It trained me to be a detective, to reach for the most needed herbs, and to trust the body to heal itself. That kind of confidence is priceless!

🍄 The Power of Turkey Tail: A Master Healer in the Woods 🌲

Did you know Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) is one of the most well-documented mushrooms for both immune and digestive health?

Master Herbalist Jo Francks breaks down why this medicinal mushroom is a powerhouse for long-term resilience:

✨ An Immune "Mediator"
Rather than simply “boosting” immunity, Turkey Tail brings it into balance. It contains active compounds (PSK and PSP) that activate our natural killer cells. For some, this means enhanced defense against seasonal illness; for others, it helps calm an overactive immune response.

✨ Exceptional Cellular Support
Research on Turkey Tail is extensive. Studies show it has one of the highest percentages of beta-glucans among fungi (over 50%!). In Japan, PSK is even used alongside traditional chemotherapy and radiation to improve immune function, survival rates, and quality of life.

✨ A Gut Health Hero
Turkey Tail is incredibly high in fiber, acting as a prebiotic that feeds and nourishes the beneficial bacteria in your gut. It supports digestion by feeding the systems that create balance from within.

☕ How to Use It:
Because it’s woody, you don’t eat it like a culinary mushroom! To get the benefits, prepare it as a long decoction (simmered for at least an hour to draw out its deeper constituents) or take it as a dual-extracted tincture. Its mild, earthy taste is incredibly grounding.

Incorporating Turkey Tail is a long-term strategy for resilience—especially if you feel depleted, catch every passing illness, or are recovering from prolonged stress.

🛁 Hot Water Therapy: When Modern Science Catches Up to Tradition 🌿

Did you know that a recent 2025 study revealed that acute hot water immersion actually triggers greater cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, and immune responses than traditional or far-infrared saunas?

For us at the School of Natural Healing, seeing this data is incredibly exciting—because it proves exactly what Dr. John R. Christopher taught over 50 years ago!

Master Herbalist Tara Christopher Eyre recently broke down this powerful connection, highlighting how hot water therapy is a cornerstone of Dr. Christopher’s famous Cold Sheet Treatment and the Incurables Program.

Here is why simply taking a hot bath is so profoundly effective:

🔥 The "Artificial Fever"
By using hot water alongside diaphoretic herb teas (like yarrow, red raspberry, or boneset), you create an "artificial fever." This heat acts as an incubator, speeding up the life cycle of bacteria and viruses—which Dr. Christopher called "nature’s perfect garbage men." It allows them to clean the waste out of our systems more quickly, leading to a true healing climax.

💧 Moist Heat vs. Dry Heat
As Dr. Christopher famously said: "Moist heat is life; it is the Garden of Eden. Dry heat is death; it is the desert." As long as fluids are administered, the body can safely sweat out toxic poisons without the dangers associated with dry heat.

🚿 The Practice for Vitality
The protocol is simple: take a daily hot bath, followed immediately by a quick cold shower or bath. The heat builds the fever, and the cold quickly closes your pores, locking in that increased internal temperature to maximize the immune boost!

The best part? This powerful healing tool is accessible to almost everyone. All it takes is a bathtub and running water.

🥗 Eat the Rainbow: Dr. Bernard Jensen’s Rainbow Salad 🌈

Following up on Dr. Bernard Jensen’s timeless rules for better eating, we wanted to share one of his signature recipes from his Master Feeding Program.

To make a true Rainbow Salad, the goal is to use fresh vegetables that bring out as many colors as possible! The different colors of the ingredients represent different vibratory rates, which nourish different organs, glands, and tissues of the body.

Here is how to build this vibrant, healing dish:

🛒 Ingredients:

⅓ head green leaf lettuce
⅓ head red leaf lettuce
⅓ head butter lettuce
3 stalks celery
1 large tomato
4 scallions (green onions)
2 medium-to-large carrots
1 small raw beet
2 small zucchini
Ground flax, sesame, or other seeds (or 1 tbsp seed-butter/tahini)

✨ Instructions:

Shred the different kinds of lettuce and toss with chopped celery, cut-up tomato, and sliced scallions.

Place the greens into salad bowls.

Spread ¼ cup of shredded zucchini and ¼ cup of shredded carrot over the top of each salad.

Top with a golf-ball-sized portion of shredded raw beet. (Dr. Jensen noted: "The raw beet is the best liver cleanser I know of!")

Sprinkle with your ground seeds or seed butter.

Finish with your favorite healthy dressing to flavor the salad!

Eating a fresh, produce-packed salad like this is one of the easiest ways to ensure your body gets the living nutrients it needs to thrive.

What is your absolute favorite healthy dressing to use on a fresh garden salad? Let us know below! 👇

🌿 Healing Starts with the Basics: 6 Rules for Better Eating 🌿

As we dive into our Master Herbalist Certification Seminar this week, we are reminded of the foundational principles of true health. Master Herbalist Jo Francks recently highlighted the timeless wisdom of Dr. Bernard Jensen—a world-renowned chiropractor, iridologist, and author.

Dr. Jensen taught that no therapy can build and repair tissue without proper nutritional support. While a healthy food regimen is important at any age, he emphasized its critical role as we age and our body systems begin to slow down.

Are you following Dr. Jensen’s 6 Guidelines for Better Eating? Let's check in:

🚫 1. Skip the Fryer: Avoid fried foods or foods cooked in hot oil. Frying destroys vital nutrients, alters the chemical composition of the food, and increases the risk of heart disease.
🍽️ 2. Listen to True Hunger: Don’t eat just because the clock says it’s "mealtime." Wait until you are genuinely hungry—that is when your digestion works best.
🧠 3. Honor Your Mind & Body: If you feel uncomfortable, stressed, or upset, put off eating. If you aren't feeling good mentally or physically, your digestion won't function properly either.
🛑 4. Don’t Overeat: Eat slowly and deliberately. Eating too rapidly means your stomach receives a second helping before your brain even realizes you are full!
🦷 5. Chew Thoroughly: Digestion begins in the mouth. Give your stomach a head start.
🛌 6. Choose Rest When Needed: Skip meals if you’re overly tired, in pain, chilled, overheated, or sick. In these moments, your body needs energy to heal and rebalance, rather than expending it on digestion.

These guidelines are just as relevant today as when Dr. Jensen published them in 1988. Many of us were never taught how to eat, just what to eat!

Which of these 6 rules is the hardest for you to follow? Let us know in the comments! 👇

🌸 It’s Hawthorn Season! The Ultimate Heart Healer ❤️

Right now—as late May turns into early June and the school year wraps up—is the perfect time to spot beautiful white and pink Hawthorn flowers blooming in dense clusters!

Master Herbalist Jo Francks always looks forward to this time of year to forage the fragrant flowers, returning later in the summer when the berries are ripe for picking.

But Hawthorn is more than just a beautiful bush. Both folk medicine and modern research have proven Hawthorn to be a prime cardiac tonic and restorer.

Why we love Hawthorn for cardiovascular health:
❤️ It is beneficial for high and low blood pressure.
❤️ It helps with rapid or arrhythmic heartbeats and inflammation.
❤️ It improves circulation by dilating the coronary arteries.
❤️ It is incredibly safe—with no side effects or contraindications, meaning it can be used long-term for any heart condition!

Dr. John R. Christopher deeply understood the power of this plant, creating his famous Hawthorn Berry Syrup. He often noted that while there are hundreds of heart diseases known to medicine, Hawthorn Berry Syrup can help heal all of them—including “broken hearts.”

In one of our favorite historical SNH testimonials, a 60-year-old WWII chemical depot worker with a severe heart leakage began taking Dr. Christopher's heart tonic daily simply because "it tasted good." When he took a mandatory physical exam at age 65, the doctor was shocked to give him a completely clean bill of health, noting his heart leakage was entirely gone. He lived a long, active life well into his eighties!

While the berries are most commonly used in syrups, don't overlook the flowers and leaves. They share many of the exact same heart-healing properties. With heart disease being a leading health concern, it is a blessing to have such safe, effective medicine growing right on the Hawthorn tree.
