A little PSA about the recent CeraVe/benzene headlines...
If you've seen the news about lawsuits involving certain acne products and benzene concerns, try not to panic. ❤️
The concern is that benzoyl peroxide (a common acne ingredient) may become unstable when exposed to excessive heat over time, potentially forming small amounts of benzene. From what I've been reading and researching, there is currently little evidence suggesting that people who have used these products as directed should be overly concerned about an increased cancer risk.
I found this video from Lab Muffin Beauty Science especially helpful. Michelle Wong, a cosmetic chemist with a PhD in chemistry, does a great job explaining the science behind the headlines in a way that's easy to understand:

The biggest takeaway for me? Store your skincare products properly.
*** Don't leave skincare products or sunscreen in hot cars.
*** Store them in a cool, dry place whenever possible.
*** Pay attention to expiration dates.
*** If a product changes in smell, color, or texture, it's probably time to replace it.
