I sometimes see people work hard to straighten a knee during exercise and then immediately walk away with the knee bent.

If you gain new motion, practice using it.

Standing, walking and functional activity help teach your brain and muscles that this new range belongs to you.

After your next stretch session, take a short walk and pay attention to how you're using the knee.

If stiffness builds whenever you stop moving, consider changing the frequency of your exercise instead of just increasing the intensity.

Thirty seconds of movement several times throughout the day may be more useful for some people than one aggressive mobility session.

Your body was designed to move frequently.

Set a timer to help you remember to move every 1-2 hours to loosen up those joints!

What keeps me motivated? The people who walk through my door. 💙

My clients inspire me every day - their determination, their humor, and their willingness to try something new, even when it feels challenging.

I love helping someone feel steadier, move more comfortably, or gain confidence doing something they’ve been avoiding. Those moments matter because of what they mean in everyday life.

And I love watching a community grow along the way. People learning each other‘s names, encouraging one another, sharing a laugh, and looking forward to coming back.

That’s what I’m building here at Proactive Therapy And Wellness in Summerfield, NC: a place to move, connect, and feel supported.

To everyone who has been part of it - thank you. You’re a big part of my “why.” 😊

If you haven’t been here yet, I’d love to welcome you. Send me a message and let’s find a class to help you get started!

Your kneecap is part of the knee's moving system.

During bending and straightening, it needs to glide relative to the thigh bone. After surgery or prolonged swelling, the tissues around it can sometimes become restricted.

That doesn't mean everyone should start pushing their kneecap around on their own—especially after recent surgery.

But it does mean that patellar mobility is something a therapist may assess when a knee simply refuses to bend.

A highly irritated knee and a quiet, chronically stiff knee aren't the same problem.

When swelling is high, gentle frequent movement may be more appropriate than repeatedly forcing the knee to its limit.

Keep it moving, watch the response, and address the irritation that's making movement harder in the first place.

If you gain motion and then immediately stop using it, your body has very little reason to keep it.

Try this sequence:

Gain some motion.
Activate the muscles in that range.
Use the range functionally.

Stretch → strengthen → move.

That combination is often far more useful than spending the entire session stretching.

Save this 3-step formula for your next workout.

Educational information only. Exercises may not be appropriate for everyone, particularly after recent surgery or injury. Follow the recommendations of your surgeon or healthcare provider and stop if an exercise causes sharp pain, significant swelling, or worsening symptoms.

Sit-to-stand isn't just a strengthening exercise.

Every repetition asks your knees to bend, accept weight, straighten and coordinate with the hips and ankles.

Use a higher surface if necessary. As strength and mobility improve, gradually work toward a standard-height chair.

How many smooth sit-to-stands can you do without using your hands?

Walking backward changes the way your knees, hips and ankles have to work.

It can be a useful way to practice controlled knee motion and quadriceps activity without simply repeating forward walking.

Start somewhere safe, use support, and take small controlled steps.

Try this beside a counter—not in the middle of a crowded room!

After pain, injury or surgery, it's common to protect one leg without even realizing you're doing it.

Gentle weight shifts help you practice trusting the leg again while introducing small, controlled knee movements.

Hold onto a chair or counter if you need to at first.

Mobility isn't only about what happens lying on a treatment table.

Watch yourself in a mirror—are you avoiding one side?
