Yesterday, I was told my baby was going to die because I chose a home birth. š¤Æ
And this is exactly why we need to talk about what people think midwives do vs. what they actually do.
Apparently, some people think midwives are just:
šæ Blowing sage
š® Chanting
š§āāļø Telling you to breathe through everything
š āHope for the bestā
No.
Midwives are trained medical professionals who study pregnancy, birth physiology, complications, postpartum, and newborn care for YEARS.
They provide full prenatal + postpartum care.
They order labs and diagnostic testing.
They monitor mother AND baby.
They carry emergency equipment and medications including oxygen and, depending on the practice, medications like Pitocin.
And yes, many also incorporate herbs and holistic care too.
Holistic ā uneducated.
And another BIG misconception:
A midwife is not a doula.
A doulaās primary role is emotional, physical, and informational support.
A midwifeās primary role is medical care.
Midwives are trained to recognize normal physiological birth and recognize when something is no longer normal.
So no, choosing a home birth does not mean Iām ādoing nothingā and hoping my baby survives.
It means Iāve intentionally chosen a provider trained to care for me and my baby through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and newborn life.
You donāt have to choose home birth.
But maybe before telling a woman her baby is going to die because of her birth choiceā¦
learn what a midwife actually does.
Because the women doing this sacred work deserve a whole lot more respect than they get. š¤
