The Tampa Bay Community Cancer Network (TBCCN) based at Moffitt Cancer Center, is a community-academic network of 28 community organizations and the cancer center. Housed in the Office of Community Outreach, Engagement, TBCCN is Moffitt’s 18+ year old community-academic partnership to address cancer disparities through outreach, education, and research.

June 19 is more than just another day. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth - a significant day in African American history and culture. Here at the office of Community Outreach and Engagement at Moffitt Cancer Center, we seek to honor the legacy of Juneteenth by addressing cancer health disparities through education and empowerment of communities across Florida. We recognize the resiliency of the people we serve and aim to contribute to the prevent and cure of cancer for all.

Pampered Preparedness is a women’s health initiative of COE designed to educate salon owners and hair stylist on breast cancer prevention education. The aim of the initiative is to increase awareness and access to breast cancer education and prevention resources in a setting frequented by women, a hair salon.

In May, the first of three initiative offerings was conducted, 11 women from varying salons in the Tampa Bay area attended an educational session at Moffitt’s McKinley campus, toured the breast clinic, and received resources to distribute in their salons. Big thank you for our featured speakers and tour guides: Dr. Marina Petsalis (Breast Surgery Fellow), Dr. Olivia Akker (Breast Imaging Fellow) and Dr. Fatima Haqqani (Breast Imaging Fellow)!

Interested in learning about trusted local community resources in Lee County? Join Community Bridge of SWFL and Moffitt Cancer Center at the South Cape Community Center on Thursday, June 25 from 9:00am to 11:00am! Moffitt COE community health educator Crystal Gomez and various organizations will be sharing information about local resources for veterans and their spouses.

We were grateful to join colleagues at the Florida Academic Cancer Center Alliance (FACCA) meeting held in Ybor City in May 2026, where teams from Offices of Community Outreach and Engagement from Moffitt (ACD: Dr. Susan Vadaparampil), the University of Florida (ACD: Dr. Ramzi Salloum), Mayo Clinic Jacksonville (ACD: Dr. Janice Krieger), and the University of Miami (ACD: Dr. Erin Kobetz) came together to strengthen collaboration and share ideas.

The meeting featured presentations from cancer collaboratives across the state, highlighting innovative community implementation grants funded by the Florida cancer centers. These projects support Florida’s Cancer Plan by advancing outreach, engagement, and evidence-based solutions that improve cancer prevention, care, and outcomes in communities across the state.

Special thanks to Dr. John L. Cleveland for attending this special session focused on Community Outreach and Engagement at the FACCA meeting!

The 16th annual Moffitt Scientific Symposium was held on May 11, 2026, showcasing almost 300 abstracts focused on important ongoing research being done across disciplines. COE team members presented posters on impactful research being done and showed their support for their fellow colleagues.

Furthermore, as recipient of the 2025 Senator Connie Mack Researher of the Year award, Dr. Susan Vadaparampil was the keynote speaker at this year's symposium. Dr. Vadaparampil has been a driving force in research on cancer risk reduction, early detection, and survivorship for two decades, with much of her research impacting underserved communities within and outside of the healthcare system. Congratulations, Dr. Vadaparampil!

As part of National Cancer Survivor Month, there are two free upcoming Zoom presentations on Nutrition and Cancer!

Offered by the Ponce Health Sciences University-Moffitt Cancer Center partnership Outreach Core, the presentations will be conducted via Zoom and will be offered in English and Spanish on Tuesday June 16, 2026.

The Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, in partnership with Discovery Science and the Patient and Family Advisory Program, invites you to a Patient Researcher Forum focused on head and neck cancers on Tuesday, August 18th. This event is taking place on Moffitt’s Magnolia campus, with a virtual attendance option available via Zoom.

This program will feature a caregiver perspective, presentations by Dr. Kedar Kirtane, Dr. Antonio L. Amelio and Daniella Bowen, a student researcher with the ENCOURAGE program. Patients and caregivers attending in person will also have the opportunity to participate in a lab tour.

The Patient Researcher Forum is designed to foster an intimate conversation between Moffitt patients and caregivers with faculty researchers and clinicians. These events are open to all, though advance registration is required.

☀️ May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month ☀️

A look at suncare habits across Florida found that in 17.9% of counties, residents report higher use of sunburn remedies than sunscreen. These are populations treating sun damage rather than preventing it.

Prevention is the more effective approach. Reapply sunscreen regularly, check the expiration date, and use broad-spectrum UV protection.
