This is exactly why we recommend an orthodontic evaluation around age 7.

Not because every seven-year-old needs braces. They do not. It gives us an opportunity to see how the permanent teeth are developing and catch a problem before one tooth damages another.

Early evaluation does not always mean early treatment. Sometimes it simply means preventing a much bigger problem later.

Most baby teeth fall out and the permanent teeth eventually take their place. But what happens when one tooth never appears?

Sometimes it needs more time. Other times, there may not be enough room for it to erupt, it may be developing in an unusual position, or another tooth may be blocking its path.

This is why a delayed permanent tooth is worth evaluating. Digital imaging allows us to see where the tooth is beneath the gums and determine whether we should continue watching it or help guide it into place.

Because we are not treating an age. We are treating the individual child in front of us.

Even siblings can lose baby teeth at different times, have different amounts of jaw growth remaining, or need completely different types of guidance. One may benefit from beginning treatment while the other is better served by waiting and watching development.

If your child's braces wire is poking or a bracket comes loose, it usually does not mean you are dealing with a true orthodontic emergency.

Orthodontic wax can provide temporary comfort, but give our office a call so we can determine the best next step and schedule a repair if needed.

If your child is in severe pain, call us immediately. Even if the discomfort improves, repairing a damaged appliance helps keep treatment moving as planned.

If your 7 year old's adult teeth look crooked, spaced, or uneven as they erupt, that does not always mean something is wrong.

A little spacing, some crowding, or teeth coming in unevenly can all be part of what orthodontists call the “ugly duckling stage.” In many cases, the best thing we can do is monitor growth and let the adult teeth continue to erupt.

The goal is not to start treatment just because we can. It is to know when treatment is actually necessary.
