THE OTHER SIDE OF GLP-1
Beyond Weight Loss and the Number on the Scale
We all know about the common side effects by now.
Nausea. Constipation. Vomiting. Diarrhea. Digestive issues.
But that is not the whole story.
Because while the conversation around GLP-1 medications often centers around weight loss, there are other risks and side effects that deserve to be part of the conversation too.
Pancreatitis.
Gallbladder problems.
Severe gastrointestinal complications.
Dehydration and potential kidney problems.
Loss of muscle and lean mass.
Hair loss.
Changes in vision for some people with diabetes.
And then there are the questions that are still emerging.
Questions around desire.
Motivation.
Pleasure.
Libido.
And whether some people are experiencing changes that go far beyond their relationship with food.
Now, this is important.
Not everyone taking a GLP-1 medication will experience these side effects or complications. And some of the emerging conversations still need more research before we can fully understand what is happening.
But I don’t believe that means we should avoid talking about them.
People deserve the full picture.
Because the number on the scale doesn’t tell us what is happening to someone’s muscle.
Their pancreas.
Their gallbladder.
Their digestion.
Their kidneys.
Their hair.
Their energy.
Or their quality of life.
These medications may offer meaningful benefits for some people. And serious risks can also be part of the story.
Both things can be true.
This isn’t about telling anyone what they should do with their body.
It’s about making sure we’re asking better questions.
And making decisions with our eyes wide open.
