At SPARC ~ Alexandria, yesterday was a beautiful reminder of what community is all about.

We spent the morning learning about Juneteenth and reflecting on the long journey toward freedom, inclusion, and opportunity. As we explored this important chapter in American history, we talked about how every person deserves the chance to participate, contribute, and belong.

That theme carried through the rest of our day. We celebrated Kyleigh's 22nd birthday with pizza, cake, laughter, and the kind of joy that comes from being surrounded by friends who genuinely care. Birthdays at SPARC are more than parties—they're celebrations of each person's unique place in our community.

Later, our team came together to continue building our Regatta boat. What looks like cardboard, tape, and measurements is really something much bigger: collaboration, problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. Everyone contributes in their own way—sharing ideas, gathering supplies, cutting, taping, designing, and encouraging one another. Every role matters.

From learning about freedom and inclusion, to celebrating a friend, to building something together, today was a powerful example of what SPARC strives to create every day: a community where every person is valued, connected, and empowered to be part of something meaningful.

All hands were on deck at SPARC Reston today as participants dove into a full slate of nautical-themed activities in anticipation of the upcoming boat regatta. The day kicked off with foam boat assembly — and the real highlight came when one participant, who brings tremendous intelligence and enthusiasm to the program, tackled the challenge of following a multi-step written instruction set. After working through the first boat together as a group, he took on the second one completely independently, and the result was nothing short of a triumph: a perfectly assembled boat and a participant beaming with well-earned pride. It was a meaningful moment of focus and follow-through that his aide and family were quick to celebrate alongside him. From there, the group shifted to sand art — peeling stickers and layering vibrant colors onto underwater-themed boards to reveal jellyfish scenes — before painting small wooden anchors to add to their growing collection of regatta keepsakes. The afternoon wrapped up with a lively round of New York Times games and Jeopardy-style connections, sending everyone off on a high note. A great day on the water — or close to it.

Last week in Art Therapy, participants completed the final preparations for our upcoming Fashion Show!

Together, they wrote runway scripts describing their fashion lines and selected which models will showcase each design. For every look, they crafted a short introduction highlighting the inspiration and creativity behind their work.

Several groups also designed promotional flyers for their fashion lines using Canva. From choosing templates to customizing images, colors, and text, they collaborated to create designs that truly reflect their vision.

With the scripts written and flyers completed, the preparation phase of our Fashion Show project has officially come to a close! We are incredibly proud of the creativity, teamwork, and self-expression our artists have demonstrated throughout this process.

Now the spotlight turns to the runway, where participants will bring their designs to life at the Fashion Show. Stay tuned—we can't wait to celebrate their hard work and creativity!

Today we celebrate Juneteenth—a day of freedom, hope, and reflection.

At SPARC, we believe that every person deserves to be seen, valued, included, and celebrated for who they are. Juneteenth reminds us that the journey toward true freedom and belonging requires all of us to build communities where every individual has the opportunity to learn, connect, contribute, and thrive.

We are grateful for the rich contributions, culture, leadership, and resilience of Black Americans, whose stories and achievements continue to strengthen our communities and inspire future generations.

As we honor this important day, we also celebrate the power of community—the kind of community where differences are embraced, friendships flourish, and everyone has a rightful and meaningful place.

From our SPARC family to yours, we wish you a joyful and meaningful Juneteenth.

SPARC ~ Alexandria’s day started with heart, as the group came together to make a card for a participant who’s currently feeling under the weather — everyone pitched in with signatures, drawings, and heartfelt notes, plus a wrapped gift decorated with hand-drawn designs to deliver to her.

From there, the group dove into the early stages of an ambitious new project: a cardboard boat for the upcoming regatta. With Alexandria taking on the boat’s bottom section, it’s shaping up to be a serious undertaking, and while supplies are still being gathered, everyone jumped in and got genuinely excited about the build.

The day wrapped up with a competitive, laughter-filled round of Exploding Kittens — a great difficulty fit for the group that let everyone play independently while still keeping things lively. But the real highlight was watching this community show up for one another. Beyond the card and gift, it showed up in smaller moments too — like one participant, who joined SPARC specifically hoping to build friendships, greeting another with a hug because she now considers her a best friend. Seeing the participants take care of each other like that is a powerful reminder of what this community is really about.

SPARC ~ Reston made the most of a rare breezy day below 80° to kick off with some indoor fun before heading out to the trails that make this center special. The morning warmed up over a game of blackjack — a Reston staple — where participants clawed back from a rough start to clean out the house entirely, with one participant putting their card-adding skills to work on every hand.

The group also built their own rhythm instruments, handheld drums with bead-wrapped strings that made for a lively and hands-on craft.

But the real star of the day was the weather, and SPARC ~Reston took full advantage — heading out for a long walk on the trails around the center, the first chance the group has had in weeks. One of the best things about a small center is that when a participant decided she wasn’t ready to go back inside while waiting for her ride, we simply didn’t — staying out to enjoy the breeze a little longer. That kind of flexibility, where individual participants have real influence over how the day unfolds, is something SPARC ~ Reston gets to offer in a meaningful way, and today it meant soaking up some much-needed fresh air together before calling it a day.

Today, we had an outstanding day celebrating the National Day of Peace. To honor the occasion, our participants worked together to create a collaborative peace collage, with everyone contributing their own unique ideas and creativity. It was a wonderful opportunity to promote teamwork, self-expression, and community building.

We officially welcomed our new intern, Izzy, by introducing her to one of SPARC~Leesburg's most beloved traditions: a spirited game of Kings-in-the-Corner. Participants were eager to teach the rules, offer advice, and share plenty of friendly competition and humor along the way. It was a fantastic afternoon that highlighted what makes our program special—meaningful connections, community, learning, and lots of laughter.

Life Is Beautiful... Tell Us Why! ✨

At SPARC ~ Arlington, we celebrated Life is Beautiful Day by reflecting on the people, passions, and moments that fill our lives with joy.

Because music is something we all love, we kicked off the day by adding more than 10 new songs to our playlist—songs that make us feel beautiful inside and out. We also created vibrant symmetrical butterfly paintings, each one as unique as the artist who made it.

One of the most touching moments came when Mia shared:

"One thing that makes me feel beautiful at SPARC is music because it makes me feel squishy! Making art that hangs on the wall makes me feel beautiful because even if I can’t see my art, everyone else can!"

Today reminded us that beauty isn't just something we see—it's something we feel through friendship, creativity, laughter, music, and the connections we share every day.

Now we want to hear from YOU:

What is one thing—big or small—that makes your life feel beautiful?

Drop your answer in the comments and help us create a wall of gratitude, joy, and inspiration for everyone to enjoy.
