Thursday at SPARC ~ Reston, creativity was in the air from the very first moment. The group dove into building their own xylophones out of popsicle sticks, each one fitted with tiny bells that added a sweet, jingling charm to every note. David rose to the occasion beautifully, working through multi-step instructions with a growing sense of independence that was genuinely exciting to witness. Once the instruments were finished, the real fun began as everyone shook and tapped along to the music playing in the room, finding their rhythm and clearly loving every second of it. David, a true music enthusiast at heart, lit up in a way that reminded everyone why this community is so special.

From there, the group explored a stone painting activity where rocks got dipped in paint, shaken in a bag, and revealed the most wonderfully unique abstract designs on the paper inside. The group also put the finishing touches on the beautiful pots they had painted earlier in the week, sealing them so the art will hold up for years to come.
And to wrap up an already full and joyful day, the first real sunshine in over a week called everyone outside for a walk together. It turned into one of those quiet, golden moments. David was eager to keep exploring, Taku and his DSP Tika spotted berries along the way and stopped to pick them, and the whole group seemed to breathe a little deeper out in the warm air.

Yesterday, we went to Gunston Hall, George Mason’s historical home. The team there made sure SPARC had an incredible time, going above and beyond to accommodate for us. We had the opportunity to go to the historical house and take a tour of the ground floor, then they took us outside to the back garden to meet the archaeologist who had shattered pottery for us to piece back together. Kat and Annie really enjoyed this part of the trip. Then, we met the horticulturist, and Hazem and Ellen helped crush chives so that we could take the seeds home for our SPARC hydroponic gardens. Lastly, the archaeological volunteer took us to an active dig site and showed us what they’re currently working on. Annie asked incredible questions, and Kat made sure we toured the gardens before we left. We had an amazing time!

Rainy weekends call for slower days — and sometimes those are the best kind.

At SPARC ~ Leesburg, participants spent the day connecting over card games, music, laughter, and friendship. Taylor brought the competitive UNO energy while Maghfoor practiced English skills through colors, numbers, and counting in a fun and natural way.

Meanwhile, Sean kept the group smiling with dancing, gestures, music, and playful “trash talk” that brought everyone together.

Today was a reminder that meaningful moments don’t have to be big or loud — sometimes connection, joy, and community are more than enough.

Tuesday at SPARC ~ Alexandria was packed with creativity, competition, and connection!

The group traded cooking hamburgers and hotdogs for something even better — art, games, and teamwork. Participants added rockets, planets, and aliens to their outer space mural while Alexandria’s resident artist, Darleen, wowed everyone once again with her incredible daily painting session. Our art wall just keeps growing!

Then it was time for Scattergories — a serious favorite around here! What started as group play quickly turned into spirited team competition filled with laughs and friendly rivalry.

After lunch, everyone shared picnic memories, talked about Memorial Day weekend, and got excited for tomorrow’s trip to Gunston Hall.

Another great day of creativity and community at SPARC Alexandria!

Our garden‑themed day at SPARC ~ Reston unfolded like a shared story. We sat together at one big table, layering fabric flowers onto mason jars to make glowing lanterns and painting pots that will soon hold real plants once they’re sealed for the outdoors. The wooden plant stakes, shaped like tiny mushrooms and bees, added a playful touch, and everyone found their own style as they worked. What stood out most wasn’t just the art but the way it opened space for connection. As brushes moved and jars dried, the group drifted into a heartfelt conversation about independence. David voiced how complicated it can feel, while Ellen, one of SPARC’s earliest and most influential participants, spoke about her lifelong push for autonomy and disability advocacy. The room felt full, not just with people, but with understanding, pride, and the sense that we were growing something together.

SPARC’s Annual Picnic at Burke Lake was one for the memory books!

After patiently counting down the days, our SPARC family gathered at beautiful Burke Lake Park the Wednesday before Memorial Day weekend for sunshine, laughter, carnival games, and LOTS of unforgettable moments.

This year’s carnival theme brought out everyone’s playful side! Participants tested their skills at human-sized Whack-a-Mole (where brave staff members popped out only to be bonked with pool noodles ), created colorful flower vases, and bonded over games like Guess My Order, where friends showed just how well they know each other.

But the true star of the day? The DUNK TANK!
The crowd cheered as participants answered trivia questions for the chance to soak staff members. One unforgettable moment came when Lizz confidently answered:
“Who is the CEO of SPARC?”
“DEBI!”

With the correct answer secured, she launched the ball and SPLASH! Jessica was officially drenched while the crowd erupted with laughter and applause. According to Akila, “I came to the event today just to dunk Jess!” Mission accomplished.

We also enjoyed an incredible lunch catered by Mission BBQ — complete with chicken, pork, beans, and cornbread that disappeared almost as quickly as it was served!

To close out the day, each center unveiled handmade miniature boats for our friendly competition. There were speedboats, passenger boats, and creative masterpieces galore, but Leesburg stole the show with a four-seater Barbie boat featuring accessible seating — proving once again that inclusion and creativity always make the best combination.

Some favorite quotes from the day:

“Even though it’s hot, I’m happy I am here with you all today.” – Annabel

“I love when all of SPARC comes together.” – Mejie

“I came to the event today just to dunk Jess.” – Akila

The weather was warm, the laughter was endless, and the sense of community was stronger than ever. Thank you to everyone who made this magical day possible!
