On Tuesday, June 9, the Consumer Skills class at Palmview Park put on art exhibit with the theme of "Creative Consumers" as a culmination of their Spring term studies. This course, which was taught by adjunct professor Yasmin Cardona, covers how to independently shop for one's needs, as well as how to be a smart, ethical consumer that uses their purchasing power to support their values.

The exhibit was a community-centered event that celebrated the creativity and voice of adults with disabilities. On display was student artwork that reflected their important takeaways from class. The students and their in-classroom supporters came together to sponsor refreshments, provide live music and poetry readings, and raffle prizes for the event. Special guests in attendance included representatives from Senator Susan Rubio's office, Mt. SAC president Dr. Martha Garcia, Mt. SAC School of Continuing Education Vice President Madelyn Arballo, and Mt. SAC School of Continuing Education Dean Laura Perez.

Thank you, City of West Covina, for being a supportive program partner, and special thanks to Yasmin Cardona for organizing this exhibit and event.

Let's share some kudos for Yesenia Serrano!👏

👩‍🏫Yesenia has taken AWD classes for the last few years now. The "Introduction to Your Rights & Responsibilities in the Workplace" and "Self Determination" classes helped her feel workforce ready enough to get a part-time job at Dollar Tree, where she still works while continuing to take classes.

👩‍🎓Last year, Yesenia completed the Physical Therapy Aide program through Short-Term Vocational, a goal she has had since she started attending AWD classes. Now, her goal is to continue learning more about the profession before getting a job in the field. Yesenia says that all of the AWD classes helped prepare her for academic success!

We look forward to seeing what Yesenia does next!
