I know all too well have summer habits can be hard to break and the looming back to school feelings can be hard on our body. Making small changes to support our self doesn’t have to be.
Starting the day with a smoothie has become a quick and easy way to power our morning. It’s a great way to get brain and body fueling nutrients from whole food sources that is kid-friendly and they can help with preparation. Our favorite go to includes plain Greek yogurt, frozen blueberries, half of a banana, amazing grass green powder, a protein powder, and a little water or unsweetened coconut milk. Pick your favorite substitutes, just be mindful of how sugar packed ingredients like flavored yogurt can be. (plain Greek yogurt has less sugar and more protein than regular plain yogurt and far less sugar than a flavored variety). The goal is to balance nutrients for slow, sustained energy for your morning activities.
Winding down for a restful night’s sleep is just as important for performance and resilience. Up to 50% of children experience, sleep problems, which, if left unaddressed can lead to daytime, sleepiness, irritability, learning difficulties, and poor academic performance (and that’s from a 2014 study… Imagine how digitally overstimulated our children and our adult systems may have become since then) Girls are especially prone to rumination and may have a harder time turning off their thinking brain and looping thoughts at bedtime that’s why we’ve started to add a relaxing herbal tea ritual to our evening routine. I let my daughter pick a tea with ingredients she thought she might like. ThisPukka blend has been a winner with chamomile, lavender hibiscus, ginger, echinacea, and elderberry for a berry-friendly, relaxing cup of warmth that promotes comfort and has nervous and immune system boosting ingredients. This particular tea also contains valerian root, which can be a kid safe non-pharmacological sleep aid for trouble sleepers. It is advised to monitor for adverse effects or allergies from any herbal ingredients.
