And that’s kind of the whole point.
There’s not a single part of me right now that feels motivated to work out most days. Half the time, I don’t even want to. I have to talk myself into it regularly.
I tell myself: 5 minutes. Just start.
And guess what? Most of the time, once I start moving, I start to feel better. Not always. Sometimes the workout is still hard, I’m still tired, and I’m still counting down until I’m done. But it all adds up.
I could sit there and do nothing because I don’t feel like it but what is that going to do for me?
So instead, I choose to show up. Over and over and over again.
On the motivated days.
The unmotivated days.
The sad days.
The tired days.
The long days.
The “I don’t feel good in my body today” days.
And showing up doesn’t always mean crushing a workout. Sometimes it’s a long walk and some stretching. Sometimes it’s a shorter lift. During pregnancy, my bare minimum promise to myself has been to pick up weights 2–3x per week and keep moving however feels good outside of that.
Because I made that promise to myself and I want to be someone who keeps promises to herself.
And honestly, this isn’t just a pregnancy thing. Even when I’m not pregnant, I don’t rely on motivation.
I LOVE fitness. I love working out. I love what I do for a living. But let me let you in on a little secret: after spending my day programming workouts, teaching classes, training clients, and helping other people reach their goals…the LAST thing I want to do is turn around and do it for myself.
It’s almost never motivation.
It’s choosing to take care of myself anyway.
Because if I can’t show up for myself and keep the promises I make to me, how can I expect myself to keep showing up for my clients, my family, my friends, and all the other people I care about?
So if you’re waiting to feel motivated today…
Don’t.
Give yourself 5 minutes.
Seriously. Just start. 🤍
