✨ Celebrating 50 Years of Westminster Village ✨

Long before Westminster Village opened its doors, a group of local church leaders shared a vision of creating a retirement community in Greater Lafayette.

In 1972, Dr. J. Dayton McCormick, Senior Pastor of Central Presbyterian Church, asked James R. “Jim” Ransom to serve as the church’s lay representative on an ecumenical committee formed to explore that possibility. The committee included pastors and lay representatives from several area churches, including the Catholic Diocese, and Jim was selected to serve as its chairman.

Jim helped carry the idea forward by meeting with leaders of the Presbyterian Housing Program and reaching out to local community members in search of the land and support needed to make the vision a reality.

His service to Westminster Village continued well beyond those early planning years. When the community later faced organizational challenges, Jim and others stepped forward to help reorganize Westminster Village as an independently owned, self-managed community. He served multiple terms on the Westminster Village Board of Directors, including as board president. Jim also helped establish the Westminster Village Foundation and served on its Board of Directors.

As Westminster Village celebrates 50 years, we remember Jim Ransom and the leadership he provided throughout our history. His vision, dedication and willingness to serve helped shape the community we know and love today.

Westminster Village resident Dave recently completed a truly one-of-a-kind creation in our woodshop!

Dave handcrafted this cigar box mandolin as a 65th birthday gift for his son, Stephen. The autographed Knuckle Sandwich cigar box came from Dave’s grandson, Brad, who once represented Guy Fieri’s cigar company.

Creating the mandolin was no small task. Because a traditional cigar box is not strong enough to withstand nearly 190 pounds of string tension, Dave carefully deconstructed, reinforced, and rebuilt the box before adding mandolin parts from MGB Guitars.

This beautiful piece is the eleventh musical instrument Dave has completed right here at Westminster Village. What an incredible example of creativity, craftsmanship, and love!
