For Olivia, getting back to pole vaulting meant getting back to something that felt familiar, exciting, and completely her.

After tearing her ACL, she chose surgery with the BEAR Implant performed by Dr. Alex Meininger at Steamboat Orthopaedic & Spine Institute.

About a year after surgery, Olivia was back practicing with her track team and returning to pole vaulting.

Basketball is one of the toughest sports on a knee. Every drive, pivot, and hard landing tests the ACL.

In fact, snowsports, soccer, and basketball account for more than half of the ACL tears among patients who have received the BEAR Implant.

As the NBA Finals kick off tonight, we'll be cheering for both teams. Which one are you rooting for?

🧠 As Mental Health Awareness Month wraps up, we wanted to revisit a part of ACL recovery that doesn't always get enough attention. For many patients recovering from an ACL tear, the emotional challenges can be just as tough as the physical ones.

Studies show that up to 40% of athletes with ACL injuries experience symptoms of depression or anxiety during recovery.

BEAR Implant patients like Curtis, Kelsey, Chris, Henry and Amy remind us that while the path to recovery is tough, it's also filled with resilience, hope and triumph.

It's National Senior Health and Fitness Day, a reminder that staying active is one of the best things you can do for long-term health. Strength training, balance work, low-impact cardio like walking or swimming, and consistency throughout the year all support healthy knees and help reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

ACL injuries are not just a young athlete's concern. To date, about 8% of BEAR Implant patients have been 55 or older, a reminder that staying active and protecting your knees matters at every age. If a knee injury does happen, the BEAR Implant is one option worth discussing with your surgeon.

One of the most common questions we hear about the BEAR Implant, and one where online information is often out of date: Does surgery have to happen within 50 days of injury?

While the 50-day timeframe was used in clinical trials, eligibility for BEAR Implant surgery is based on one thing: the quality of the remaining tissue. Earlier may be better because tissue quality degrades over time, but the timing of this process is different for everyone.

For physical therapists, an ACL tear directly impacts their ability to work, demonstrate movement, and support patients through their own recovery.

The latest story in our BEAR at Work series features Abby Friesen, a physical therapist who tore her ACL while skiing. For someone on her feet all day demonstrating exercises and helping patients, returning to full strength was essential.

Abby and her surgeon, Brian Gilmer, MD of the Swift Institute, share why the BEAR Implant was the right option, what rehab looked like, and how she returned to work just two weeks after surgery.

Today, at 11 months post-surgery, Abby is back to running, hiking, climbing, biking, and swimming.

⁉️Myth or Fact⁉️

A common assumption about the BEAR Implant is that it's best for proximal tears. In practice, it's used across a much broader range of tear types, from proximal avulsion to distal, as well as partial tears.

What matters most is whether there's enough usable ACL tissue for the surgeon to tension and bring the ends toward each other, and that assessment happens during the procedure.
