Depression isn't always a willpower problem. It's often a messaging problem.

Dopamine works like a running tally in the brain, an acknowledgment that something good just happened. In a person with blunted reward signaling, the good deed still happens, but the body doesn't register it. That's why the same lifestyle advice works for one person and does almost nothing for another.

Dr. Bajaj breaks down two mechanisms behind depression, and why behavior and lifestyle are often the real lever. Full post on the blog: https://gowellrooted.com/depression-and-brain-energy/

Your spinal discs have no blood supply of their own. Dr. Bajaj explains how they get fed anyway, through a thin layer of bone above and below each disc called the endplate, and why movement is what actually drives that exchange.

Part 2 in an ongoing series on osteoporosis, covering bone metabolism and what happens when the endplate calcifies.

Reflux feels like a heartburn problem. It isn't just that.

Most people treat reflux as something to quiet down with whatever's in the medicine cabinet and move on with their day. But reflux is a sign that something's off with digestion, not just with what's coming back up. And when it's left unaddressed, it doesn't stay contained to the stomach. Over time, it can start affecting how you breathe too.

This is Part 1 of a series on what reflux actually is, and what it actually takes to resolve it, not just manage it. Full breakdown on the blog: https://gowellrooted.com/acid-reflux-long-term-ppi-side-effects/

That afternoon coffee might be working against you long after you finish it. Caffeine has a half-life of 5-6 hours, meaning a cup at 8pm can still be active in your system at 2am. The rule of thumb: give caffeine 8-9 hours before bed, and up to 13 hours if it's a pre-workout dose before an evening workout.

This is Part 1 of a 12-part series on sleep from Dr. Anish Bajaj at Well Rooted Health, starting with the sleep hygiene changes you can make tonight, before moving into how to actually monitor and measure sleep quality.

Anxiety doesn't stay in your head. It spreads.

The brain's stress response pulls in your heart, your gut, your muscles, whether or not they were ever part of the problem. That's why anxious patients so rarely deal with just racing thoughts.

Dr. Bajaj breaks down what's actually happening in the nervous system, and what brain function testing can show us about an anxious brain. Full post on the blog:

Most people think a bone density number tells the whole story.

It doesn't.

I've read thousands of these reports, first as the neuromusculoskeletal lead on a research team, and in practice ever since. That experience is behind a new series I'm starting on osteoporosis.

The first post covers two things I kept seeing repeat: screening that usually doesn't start until 65 (so there's no baseline to compare against), and real clinical value that gets lost between the imaging center and the doctor reading the report.

IBS isn't just a gut issue — it's a nervous system issue. The gut has its own nervous system (the enteric nervous system), and when it becomes overly sensitive, everyday digestion can turn into pain, bloating, or unpredictable bowel changes. Stress, gut bacteria imbalance, and food sensitivities can all play a role in that sensitivity. A closer look at what's actually happening — and where to start — on the blog. Link in bio.
