Is your son complaining of front-side shoulder pain after pitching? 🛑✋

At Integrated Performance, we find that front-side shoulder pain is almost always a "connection" problem. If a pitcher lacks mobility and stability in their upper back and hips, they can't achieve proper hip-shoulder separation. This forces the arm to do the heavy lifting, causing the muscles in the front of the shoulder to overwork and become inflamed.

We use data-driven drills like the Half Kneeling Band Pull with Thorax Rotation to:
✅ Connect the upper back and hips
✅ Create the stability needed for a powerful delivery
✅ Off-load the stress from the front of the shoulder

Serving Westfield, Noblesville, Carmel, and Zionsville—we specialize in identifying the mechanical flaws that lead to injury. Don't just play through the pain. Fix the connection.

Injuries are a tough reality in sports, and while we all wish to avoid them, they do happen. When you're competing at a high level, there's always a risk. Achilles injuries can be particularly challenging—painful and requiring a long recovery—but thankfully, most aren't career-ending.

So, what does rehab for an Achilles repair look like?

In the first phase (weeks 0-4), we focus on protecting the repair while strengthening the rest of the body. During this time, we minimize swelling with ice and elevate the leg in a boot. To build strength without putting strain on the ankle, we may use blood flow restriction techniques. We typically start with non-weight bearing in the boot and then shift to weight-bearing as tolerated by week 2.

As we move to the next phase (weeks 4-8), it's all about normalizing your walking. At week 4, you'll start walking with crutches in a boot, using heel wedges to help offload the tendon. Each week, we'll gradually reduce those wedges until you’re walking normally by week 8. Gentle calf isometrics may begin around this time.

From months 3 to 5, we dive into building strength. This involves calf strengthening through seated heel raises and eventually moving to standing heel raises and single-leg raises. We'll also work on walking endurance and integrate the ankle into lower body workouts. You might even start doing some throwing exercises during this phase.

In months 6 to 8, it's time to step up your training. We'll incorporate plyometrics and focus on building power in the ankle. You'll also start working on positional drills at sub-max effort, making your training look more like what it did before the injury.

Finally, from month 9 to 12, we’ll gear up for a return to your sport. You'll practice regularly and simulate game scenarios as much as possible. We're back to strength training like before, participating in team drills, and preparing for the big return to games.

You must warm up to throw, not throw to warm up.

Your pre-throw routine is crucial for a successful outing. In this video you see me talking about making sure to grip the handles during your pre-throw band routine. Why? Because your grip is directly connected to your shoulder stabilizers.

Make sure to use your grip in your pre-throw warm up to properly activate your shoulder stabilizer!

Share with a teammate to help them out!

Is your son’s elbow pain actually a shoulder issue? ⚾️🤔

When we see high school pitchers dealing with lingering elbow soreness, the first thing we look at isn't the elbow—it’s the shoulder.

If a pitcher is limited in shoulder external rotation strength, the shoulder cannot properly stabilize the arm during the high-velocity phase of a pitch. The force produced by their legs and core becomes "too much" for the shoulder to handle, and that excess stress gets dumped directly onto the elbow.

At Integrated Performance, we bring pro-level physical therapy to local Westfield, Carmel, and Noblesville athletes. We help them build the shoulder strength necessary to protect the elbow and increase performance simultaneously.

Don't let him play through "soreness." Let's fix the root cause. 👉 Schedule a consult today: http://integratedperformanceteam.com

Is your pitcher’s arm taking the brunt of every throw? ✋⚾️

At Integrated Performance, we often find that "arm pain" is actually a "mobility problem" in the mid-back. If a pitcher can't rotate through their thoracic spine, they cannot create the separation needed for elite velocity.

The Thread the Needle (shown in the video) is one of the primary tools we use to restore that rotation. By improving T-spine mobility, we:
✅ Increase Hip-Shoulder Separation (Higher Velo)
✅ Decrease torque on the medial elbow (Less injury risk)
✅ Create a more efficient, effortless delivery

We bring the professional standard of care to athletes in Westfield, Noblesville, Carmel, and Zionsville. Don’t just treat the pain—fix the mechanical breakdown.

What’s the most common injury in a high school pitcher?

When talking about high school pitchers, the elbow and shoulder get talked about the most, but what is the most common injury?

Shoulders account for a high percentage of players being hurt, however elbow injuries account for more players needing to take time off.

Of these injuries, a higher number of players with shoulder pain had a muscle strain (38.7%) while a higher number of players with an elbow injury had a ligament sprain (42.7%).

What is the number one predicter of these injuries? Throwing on a tired arm!! Make sure you are getting enough time to recover from your outings!
