"At what age can my kid safely start lifting weights?"
Parents ask me this more than any other question. ๐ŸŒณ

Most expect "high school" or "after puberty."
That answer has been wrong for 20+ years.

Here's what the American Academy of Pediatrics, the NSCA, and the British Journal of Sports Medicine all agree on:

โ–ช๏ธ There is no magic age โ€” readiness matters more than birthday

โ–ช๏ธ The AAP says ages 5 to 7 is a reasonable window to start

โ–ช๏ธ Strength training has no apparent negative effect on growth

โ–ช๏ธ Supervised strength training has LOWER injury rates than other youth sports

That's why we start at age 6 at Mighty Oak Athletic โ€” right in the middle of the AAP-supported window. ๐ŸŒณ

Most strength gyms make kids wait until middle school. By then, they have lost 6 or 7 years of movement development they could have been building.

The three signs your kid is ready:
