MEET DÓNAL CREEDON | BUDDHIST MEDITATION TEACHER

What happens when deep contemplative practice meets a spirit of open inquiry?

Dónal Creedon brings a rare combination of Buddhist wisdom, dedicated practice and genuine curiosity to his teaching. Highly respected and deeply appreciated for his warmth, openness and sincerity, he offers an approach to meditation that invites us not only to become still, but also to look deeply into the nature of our minds and experience.

Dónal trained extensively with masters of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in Europe, India and Nepal, undertaking long periods of intensive retreat. His time at the Krishnamurti Centre in Varanasi, where he served as resident Buddhist scholar, further enriched his understanding and teaching.

Drawing on both the contemplative depth of the Buddhist tradition and the radical spirit of inquiry inspired by J. Krishnamurti, Dónal encourages an exploration that goes beyond technique — inviting us to question our habitual ways of seeing and discover a more direct relationship with life.

Today, on the 13th anniversary of the passing of Akong Tulku Rinpoche, we remember the founder of Tara Rokpa Centre.

Rinpoche’s compassion, vision and dedication to benefiting others continue to inspire all who walk this path. His wish to create places where people can find peace, reflect and deepen their understanding of themselves and others lives on here at Tara Rokpa Centre.

May his legacy continue to flourish, for the benefit of all beings.

Simplicity: A Meditation Retreat with Dónal Creedon

14 November to 12 December 2026, with week options

Tara Rokpa Centre, NW Province, South Africa

In an increasingly complex world, this retreat offers an opportunity to simplify, turn inward and reconnect with the clarity and awareness at the heart of Buddhist practice.

Guided by the teachings and supported by the retreat environment, participants will have the space to step away from everyday demands, examine habitual patterns and deepen their meditation practice.

The retreat is particularly suited to those with some meditation experience, although everyone who is sincerely willing to engage with the programme is welcome. Participants are asked to enter into the spirit of the retreat with commitment, mutual respect and an openness to letting go of personal agendas for a while.

Simple, but not easy — an opportunity to move from the noise and complexity of our usual habits towards greater stillness, awareness and clarity.

Dónal Creedon is a highly respected Buddhist meditation teacher, deeply appreciated for his warmth, openness, and sincerity. He brings many years of experience to his teaching, grounded in deep personal practice and study. He trained extensively with masters of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in Europe, India, and Nepal, including long periods of intensive retreat. Dónal’s teaching is rooted in this tradition, while also being informed by his time at the Krishnamurti Centre in Varanasi, where he served as the resident Buddhist scholar.

South African Human Rights Day Monday, 27 April

"May there be peace among the gods, in heaven and among the stars;
May there be peace on earth, among humans and animals; May we not hurt each other; May we be generous to each other;
May we have that intelligence which will guide our life and action;
May there be peace in our prayer, on our lips and in our hearts.”

From an ancient Sanskrit prayer.

Family Easter Camp 2026
2 April (5pm) – 6 April (1pm) SAST

Join us for a heartwarming Easter weekend at Tara Rokpa Centre — a family-friendly retreat in nature, where “family” means everyone.

Easter Camp has always been a joyful, come-as-you-are gathering. Parents and children, solo travellers, friends, community members, urban tribes — all are welcome. Whether you arrive with little ones in tow or simply with a longing to reconnect, you’ll find a place here.

This year, our time together will be gently guided by the Tibetan understanding of the Five Elements — earth, water, fire, air and space.

🌍 Earth — grounding and stability
💧 Water — flow and feeling
🔥 Fire — warmth and vitality
🌬 Air — movement and clarity
🌌 Space — openness and possibility

Through reflections, visualisations, creative play with art materials and natural objects, guided relaxations from the Tara Rokpa Therapy toolbox, and gentle mindful movement, we’ll explore how these elements live within us and around us. As we begin to notice their shifting balance, we cultivate greater harmony — in body, mind, relationships, and our connection to the natural world.

A Relaxed & Nourishing Weekend

Set in the wide-open bushveld, this is a space to rest, breathe and simply be.

✨ Meditation (optional)
✨ Walks in the beautiful surroundings
✨ Swimming, mountain biking, birding
✨ Star-gazing under vast skies
✨ Singing around the campfire
✨ Or just… sleep

Children are warmly welcomed. If numbers allow, there will be a special morning programme just for them — with creative activities and the much-loved Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. (Babies and toddlers remain in the care of their parents or caregivers; discounted caregiver rates available on request.)

We begin with supper on Thursday (guests may also arrive for Friday lunch) and close with lunch on Easter Monday — a long weekend of simplicity, connection and joy.

🌿 Come to breathe.
🌿 Come to play.
🌿 Come to rest.
🌿 Come to reconnect with what truly matters.

Beneath an autumn sky so wide and luminous, the Tara Rokpa Centre held us in its quiet beauty this past weekend.

A small circle of people gathered here for a Tara Rokpa Therapy weekend — arriving with open hearts, leaving with a little more gentleness toward themselves and the world. Between the stillness of the land, the clear light of the sky, and the warmth of shared presence, something subtle but profound unfolded.

As the poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote:
“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.”

We're grateful for the courage, honesty, and kindness that filled this space. And grateful for this sky — vast, quiet, and perfectly holding it all.

A gentle weekend of coming home to ourselves at the Accepting Yourself, Finding Peace retreat at Tara Rokpa Centre, beautifully guided by Vera Hey.

Through mindfulness, meditation, gentle yoga and time in nature, we explored self-acceptance and self-forgiveness—learning how to soften the inner critic and become our own best friend.

As Rumi reminds us, the path is not about seeking love, but removing the barriers we’ve built against it.
Grateful for the openness, courage, and quiet moments of connection shared together.

Vera Hey is a mindfulness practitioner and an experienced mindfulness facilitator. She applies the insight and awareness gained from her mindfulness practice to both her personal life and her career as a psychological counsellor. She is a student of Rob Nairn, an international Mindfulness and Meditation teacher, and has completed his facilitator training course.

Vera will be facilitating a weekend retreat at Tara Rokpa Centre 30 Jan to 1 Feb on the theme of Accepting Yourself, Finding Peace: Cultivating inner peace through self-acceptance and self-forgiveness.

Many of us built an inner prison of beliefs about our deficient selves. The biggest threat to our happiness and well-being is when we turn on ourselves with blame, based on a chronic sense of not being enough or not being good enough. Our inner critic can be so harsh and unforgiving!

It takes a conscious commitment to befriend ourselves and cultivate self-forgiveness! Self-forgiveness is about becoming your own best friend. It is about building a connection with yourself that is more real and true than any personality traits we may have.

During this retreat, we’ll explore how to cultivate self-acceptance and self-forgiveness. We’ll also consider goals one may choose for this year to build a relationship with oneself.
