Today, South Africa reaches a significant milestone in its HIV prevention response. President Cyril Ramaphosa and Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi are officially launching the national rollout of lenacapavir (LEN), the twice-yearly injectable HIV PrEP option, today in Mpumalanga, as part of a phased national rollout.

Selected government clinics across six provinces - Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and the Western Cape – are to begin offering LEN as an additional HIV prevention choice.

Find a full list of participating facilities herehttps://sahivsoc.org/Files/LEN-FACILITIES-BY-PROVINCE-2-1.pdf, with thanks to Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism for making this available.

Vulnerable key populations will be prioritised.

This suggests that the disruption of US aid for HIV services has slowed the growth of our HI...

Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), also referred to as hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), is a rare but severe zoonotic respiratory disease caused by hantaviruses carried by rodents.

Humans are typically infected through inhalation of airborne particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva.

The illness usually begins with nonspecific symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal complaints, but can rapidly progress to cough, shortness of breath, and acute respiratory distress due to fluid accumulation in the lungs and capillary leakage.

This can lead to shock and life-threatening respiratory failure. HPS is characterized by rapid clinical deterioration and has a high case fatality rate, requiring prompt supportive medical care.

Checking in from TCIS Africa Clinical Investigator's Summit 2026🌍🔬

This year's theme, Empowering Africa-led Clinical Research, resonates deeply with our core mission at Sediba Hope Medical Centre. Driving sustainable partnerships for local and global health impact isn't just a goal; it's the foundation of how we operate.

From validating point-of-care diagnostic technologies in resource-limited field settings to evaluating peer-led framework models for infectious disease management, our team knows firsthand that robust, community-level clinical research is essential for health equity. Africa holds extraordinary potential, and it is inspiring to connect with fellow investigators, regulators, and innovators to ensure that our continent is leading the clinical narrative rather than just participating in it.

We cannot work in silos. By strengthening our public-private partnerships and focusing on implementation science, we are taking local, evidence-based data from the Tshwane and helping to shape solutions that can scale across the continent.
