Pain is a warning signal, sometimes a damage report BUT sometimes it’s your brain telling you something else is wrong!

Most of us have always been taught pain = damage… This one reframe where pain actually arises from and what this means for you, your stress levels and how you treat it…

Full new Substack essay linked in my story (& bio) and to be clear, this advice sits alongside your medical team’s support and not instead of it!

My brain needs 90 minutes of nature, quiet, sun and a very present focus on the terrain in front of me as it slowly take the solid slab of 💩 it’s been dealing with all weak and shakes into tiny pieces that seem to blow away in the wind before I’m done!

I’d highly recommend it!

Twenty-five years, one idea.

Rugby, then rehab for professional footballers, then rebuilding injured soldiers coming back from Afghanistan, then gyms, executives and mountains.

Different countries, many gyms, same lesson:
We cannot separate the body from the state of the nervous system carrying it, and real performance is what we can sustain, not what we can force irregularly.

That’s what I’ll be sharing more of here.

For years I’ve been suspecting that I’m on to something, now it’s time formalise it, fill in the gaps and share with you!

Stick around if it’s your kind of thing.

Midlife hits high-performing men in a strange way.
You’ve built the career, the reputation, working on the physique, and then the drive that got you there just isn’t firing the same way…

Focus scatters. Recovery slows.
The edge feels dull, even though you’re doing “everything right.”

That’s rarely a willpower problem. More often it’s a nervous system and brain performance challenge, and it’s what I now spend my time working on.

I’m currently on a side quest to complete an MSc in Neuroscience, and use qEEG brain mapping and neurofeedback as tools to look under the hood:
🧠
How the brain is regulating stress, attention and recovery, and where that regulation is breaking down. Paired with coaching and physical performance work, it gives a much clearer picture of what’s actually limiting someone, rather than guessing.

Up until now I’ve been helping people with movement, (1 hour a day, 2-3 days a week) to combat the ill effects of all of the above…

Now it’s time to step out of that lane and dig into the other 23 hours a day and helping you figure out for yourself what effect your brain and recovery is having on the rest of your life!
🙌
So LFG!

Sometimes the problem is not the problem, sometimes it is our attitude towards the problem…
🤔
For me exercising takes the weight of the problem in my head and shakes it… Rattles it around, chips away at it, breaks it down into smaller pieces -> massively weakening it…
🙌
Running, lifting, cycling does nothing to actually change the external circumstances but it enables me to look at things differently and have more confidence in my own capacity to deal with it…
💪
I wonder how many of use exercise as our only stress reliever?
Our only strategy to help us feel better?
Talking helps…
Resting helps…
Supplements help…
But also having a purpose helps…
Having a mission or a massive goal helps…
🤔
But how many of us tap into that?
The deeper work…?
🤷‍♂️

Don’t give up your day job they said!
😂
The other day I shared some videos on the investigation that’s going on into how covid was managed.
Whatever your position is now or was back then, we all know the endless list of restrictions didn’t make sense, millions died and maybe millions more since…
🤯
The grey area in between those who think the people in charge did their best to help keep people safe and those who think they whole thing was “planned for profit” is in my mind, a reflection of how much empathy each of us is willing to show and who we choose to be empathetic to…
🙌
At the end of the day we’re all still the same, we’re all human, we’re all messy.
Some people want answers and some people want to move on.
👀
Will we ever know enough to make sure this never happens again?
Will people be ok admitting they were wrong?
Will people forgive each other & welcome them back in?
Will our beliefs continue to be attributed to somebody else’s politics?
Will the right amount of trust ever be restored in experts?
🤷‍♂️
All of this is broken, and can never be repaired without the truth….
Some people are trying but hiding the truth and staying quiet doesn’t give any of us anything we need for a better future, that’s all I wanted to show you because I expected you probably missed it in your news feed!
📰

I would love to hear your thoughts on this, if you missed this in the news during the week -> it’s saved in a highlight on my page…
☝️
Lots of people messaged me saying they never knew any of this…

We all went through it together
We all felt the same pressure
They worked hard to scare all of us into submission

We need the truth because trust is broken and if a legitimate virus occurs we will have serious problems.

I’d love to hear your thoughts below & would like other people to see how much interest there is in this because I was quite surprised how many people quietly messaged me or liked the different stories…

There’s way more people angry about this than I expected.

Anxiety is frequently viewed as a weakness...

In reality, it’s often a highly functional survival mechanism working overtime.

An anxious mind is usually trying to do one thing:
Protect you by subconsciously scanning for threats
-> worst-case scenarios.

The issue is when the volume turns up too high...
And struggles to switch off!

Rather than asking: “Why am I not stronger?”

A better question may be:
“What is my current brain state that’s interpreting the world around me?”

Over caffeinated? Hungry? Underslept? Dehydrated? Sedentary? Inflammed? Too hot? Exhausted? Bloated? Overwhelmed? Worried? Unconfident?

Sometimes understanding your own temporary state before anxiety kicks in reduces its power and gives you a lever you can pull to calm your nerves.

Understanding and compassion often succeeds where criticism fails.
