The word depression makes most of us picture crying, or not being able to get out of bed. So when it turns up as a short fuse, or as not caring much about anything any more, it is easy to rule yourself out.

That is part of why it goes unnamed for so long. It does not match the picture.

It is also easy to talk yourself out of asking for help while you are still managing. Still going to work, still getting everyone where they need to be, still answering the phone. Holding it together is not proof that you are doing fine.

If some of what is in this carousel feels familiar, it is worth a conversation. Not because there is something wrong with you, but because you do not have to keep working it out on your own.

Save it, or send it to someone you have been a bit worried about.

We offer counselling for ages five and up in Bacchus Marsh and Stanhope, and telehealth Australia wide.

Most of us were raised on “you are fine, off you go”. So when our own child falls apart, the instinct to fix it is already moving before we have thought about anything.

There is nothing wrong with that instinct. It is just in the wrong order.

The six things in this carousel are the ones we come back to most often with families. None of them are complicated. The hard part is doing them while you are tired, running late, and hearing about the same argument for the fourth time this week.

You will not get it right every time, and that is not the goal. Children are not looking for a flawless parent. They are looking for one who comes back afterwards and says that got heated, let us try again. The repair matters more than the moment you lost your patience.

Swipe through, then save it for the next hard afternoon.

If the big feelings at your place are more than a rough patch, we see children from age five in Bacchus Marsh and Stanhope, and by telehealth anywhere in Australia.

It really is a struggle 😔

You didn’t choose what happened to you, but you do get to choose what you do with it 🫶

Sitting with a hard feeling is one of those things people say a lot and explain almost never.

It does not mean lying on the floor with it for six hours. It also does not mean shoving it down and getting back to work. Both of those tend to make the day worse.

Here is the middle ground, in three steps.

Name it. Not “bad”. Try disappointment, dread, loneliness, shame. Getting specific actually takes some heat out of a feeling, which is the opposite of what most of us expect.
Give it somewhere to go. Ten minutes of writing with no editing. Saying it out loud in the car on the way home. Crying if that is what wants to happen. Just watch the difference between expressing something and going over and over it, because the second one keeps you stuck.
Do one thing that looks after you. A shower. A proper feed. Ten minutes outside with the dog. It sounds small. Doing something instead of nothing is one of the most consistently useful things we know of.

Save this one for the day you need it, because that is not the day you will remember it.

And if the hard days are stacking up, or the reset stops working, that is worth bringing to someone. We are here in Bacchus Marsh and Stanhope, and on telehealth across regional Victoria.

Still gets me, this one.

A single sentence can stay with someone for years. It can become the voice that steadies them the next time things get hard, or the line that finally convinces them they’re allowed to choose themselves. We rarely find out which sentence it was.

Words don’t just get heard. They get carried, and sometimes they quietly become someone’s inner voice.

So be gentle with what you say. You never know what someone is holding onto. 🫶

Where a portion of every session goes 🤍

We wanted to share this, mostly because these two organisations do work that deserves more attention than it gets.

A portion of every session at A Country Mind is set aside and donated to an Australian charity. We choose one each financial year. It’s a small way of saying thank you for trusting us with your time, and of sending something back into the communities we work in.

Through 2025/26 that has been Dollys Dream Australia Dolly’s Dream works with young people and families facing bullying and cyberbullying, with a focus on rural, regional and remote communities. They run a 24/7 support line staffed by qualified counsellors, and they take their education work directly into country schools. If you have kids at home, their free resources for parents are well worth a look.

From 2026/27 we’ll be supporting Aussie Hay Runners They’re a volunteer convoy of farmers, truck drivers and everyday Australians who deliver hay to farming families through drought, fire and flood. The drivers give their time and their trucks. The hay is either donated by farmers who have some to spare or bought with money the public gives, and every dollar donated goes to buying hay. Since 2019 they’ve delivered more than 73,000 bales. Their line is that it’s not a hand out, it’s a hand up.

Both do practical work that reaches people at the point they need it most. If either one speaks to you, please give them a follow. They’re worth knowing about whether you ever sit down with us or not.

Thank you for being part of it 🫶
