Last week our radiologists Dr Andrew Low and Dr James Bewes hosted our first referrer education night alongside local orthopaedic surgeons Eugene Chung, MBBS, MSc, BSc (Hons), FRACS, FAOrthA, Dr Jay Amaranath and Dr Nick Hartnell 🤩

We had almost 50 GPs, medical students and allied health professionals attend the evening which was focused on case-based discussions of interesting and challenging musculoskeletal presentations, with insights from both orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal imaging perspectives 🤗

A big thank you to all who attendeded - we received an overwhelming response to the evening and have had lots of positive feedback since the night, so we are looking forward to the next education event already 😍

✨ One of our sonographers, Natasha, is about to embark on an incredible experience volunteering on board the Africa Mercy Ship in Madagascar!

Thanks to Natasha for taking the time to answer some of our questions below! ⬇️

❔What inspired you to take part in the Mercy Ships volunteering program?

“I used to watch the Surgery Ship TV show with my children when they were young and always felt moved by the stories and how little access to healthcare African countries still have in this day and age. I’d usually shed a tear and told myself one day, when my kids were grown I’d volunteer. Now that time has come there’s nothing to stop me going. I really want to do something meaningful to offer the skills I have to help in a small way some of the poorest people on earth.” 🙏🏼

❔What are you most looking forward to about the experience?

“I am looking forward to seeing first hand how the people of Madagascar can be helped by the health services we take for granted. I am on a maxillofacial rotation so believe there will be lots of cute children having scans and surgeries. I am excited to live on a hospital ship for a month with like minded people from countries all over the world. I believe there are 400 crew on board with many social activities and opportunities to share experiences. And I hope to maybe see some of Madagascar including the lemurs!”🤩

❔What are some of the challenges you may be faced with?

“Definitely getting there! There are 3 international flights and 1 domestic flight plus the jet lag that comes from time differences. The language barrier will be a challenge - locals speak Malagasy or French but English is spoken on the ship. Thankfully we have a radiology assistant to translate for us. I will be sharing a cabin with someone I’ve not met yet and dining with hundreds of people I’ve never met. I will be going without the comforts of home but I’m hoping for decent coffee with a cafe and barista on board.” ☕️
