Dopamine is a brain chemical that acts as your brain's "reward centre," fuelling motivation, pleasure, and reinforcement. It releases just when you experience a reward, as well as when we're anticipating one, encouraging us to repeat behaviours essential for survival and when we achieve our goals.
Setting and aiming for goals, or even crossing items off a to-do list, creates a steady stream of dopamine.
Also, the catalyst for dopamine is consuming proteins rich in the amino acid to create in our bodies the building blocks needed to synthesize dopamine.
Movement and exercise boost dopamine, enhancing our mood and creating a sense of reward. Enjoying hobbies, socializing, listening to music, and relationships with intimacy naturally surge a dopamine rush.
Dopamine is heavily tied to learning and desire. Once our brain associates a specific trigger— like smelling your favourite food or opening your social media feed
—with a pleasurable reward, your dopamine levels begin to rise with anticipation. This motivates us to take action to secure the reward.
While healthy habits provide gradual and sustainable dopamine increases, certain artificial stimulus, like "pokies," pachinco, and addictive behaviours, force unnaturally large cascades of the hormone.
Sh*tty diets full of junk foods trigger heavy dopamine releases, conditioning your brain to crave them despite long-term health problems and obesity.
I remember having a conversation many years ago about addiction with my mentor, Gwyn, who said identifying the unhealthy addiction and replacing it with a healthy addiction, serves the dopamine hit, but with a much more positive outcome.
So, choose where we focus our attention, encourage our interests, what lights us up, and head towards those aims and goals we want to strive for. The rewards are definitely worth it.
Warmly,
Dayle
