Tonight I had the privilege of speaking at the Rotary Club of Essendon about my journey, what has shaped me, and why I care so deeply about healthcare, access and community.

I spoke about arriving in Australia as a refugee, the struggles and opportunities that followed, and the responsibility I now feel to hold doors open for others.

These are values I am privileged to put into practice every day through Pharmacy 777 Pascoe Vale and the Rotary Club of Pascoe Vale working within community to improve health literacy, create access and help people feel seen and supported.

These conversations are important because they challenge perceptions and remind us what refugees can contribute when given opportunity, what women can achieve when given a seat at the table, and what healthcare professionals can do when we think beyond the walls of our clinics and pharmacies.

I will never take for granted the opportunities this country has given me. The best way I know to honour them is to use my voice, my profession and my experiences to create opportunities for others.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Essendon for welcoming me and creating space for conversations that strengthen communities.

Proud to represent Pharmacy 777 and community pharmacy at the 25th Anniversary International Overdose Awareness Day Commemorative Forum, alongside Penington Institute, SHARC and Family Drug and Gambling Help.

Today was about remembering those we have lost, supporting the families and communities affected, and recognising that overdose can affect anyone.

As pharmacists, we see patients every day. We have an opportunity to talk about medicine safety, Naloxone and overdose risk, reduce stigma and make sure people know where to get help.

We need more health professionals and frontline workers being proactive, increasing awareness and helping people feel safe asking for support.

Don’t wait for someone to ask for help. Start the conversation. One conversation could save a life.

More than $2.12 million raised for My Room Children’s Cancer Charity. An incredible result, but behind that number are children and families facing days that most of us can’t imagine.

There were tears in that room. There was also so much love.

And then there is Margaret Zita. What an extraordinary woman. The love she has for these children and their families is something you can feel when she speaks. Her devotion to this work is beautiful to witness. She gives so much of herself to this cause, and I have so much admiration for her.

Margaret, you really are an angel.

To everyone at My Room Children’s Cancer Charity, thank you for reminding us what can happen when people simply care enough to help.

Whatever we do for these kids, it will never feel like enough.

Last night’s My Room Children’s Cancer Charity Gala was incredibly emotional. There were moments that had me, and so many others in the room, in tears.

Behind every story is a child who should simply be able to be a child, and a family going through something no family should ever have to face.

This cause is very close to my heart. I’m so grateful to have been in a room full of people who care deeply and want to help make life a little easier for these children and their families.

Thank you My Room Children’s Cancer Charity for everything you do.

For the kids. For their families. And for the hope that one day, no child has to face cancer.

Last year, I stood at the Patients Australia Patient’s Choice Awards incredibly humbled to receive the Outstanding Community Pharmacist Award.

This year, I returned to serve as a judge and help recognise the extraordinary work of others.

I had the opportunity to review five incredible finalists, each demonstrating in their own way what patient-centred care looks like. To me, they were all winners, because behind every submission are real patients, real communities and professionals who have chosen to go beyond what is expected of them to create better health outcomes, greater access and meaningful change.

Congratulations to Anna Theophilos, this year’s Outstanding Community Pharmacist. A thoroughly deserved recognition of work that is innovative, measurable and making a genuine difference for patients.

Seeing the collective commitment in the room was special, from pharmacists, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, advocates, students and leaders. Different roles, but a shared purpose: better care for patients.

Thank you to Patients Australia, Lisa Robins, Michele Robbins and the entire team for continuing to put patients at the centre and for creating a platform that shines a light on healthcare professionals whose work deserves to be seen and celebrated.

And thank you to The Pharmacy Guild for its continued support of community pharmacy and the people working every day to strengthen the health of their communities.

Mentorship has shaped so much of who I am, both personally and professionally.

But I believe there comes a point when being mentored is no longer enough. We have a responsibility to become the mentor.

To share what we have learnt.
To make the introduction.
To create the opportunity.
To give someone the confidence to step forward.
To open doors that may have once been opened for us.

Leadership isn’t just about how far we go. It’s about whether we turn around and help someone else come with us.

Some of the greatest impact we will ever have in healthcare may never appear on our CV. It will live in the people we encouraged, developed and believed in.

If someone helped open a door for you, hold it open for someone else.

That is how we develop people, strengthen our profession and build the next generation of healthcare leaders.
