My clients feel like family members to me and I cherish them just as much.
I not only value building our relationship prenatally but I will check in with you long after you have had your baby and our time together is officially complete (in terms of our contract).

Because you matter to me.

Much Love,
Carrie 💜

You already know that you'll be wanting an epidural once you get to the hospital but what if it takes a long time before they have a room ready for you?
Or the OB is in surgery or with other patients?
Or the anesthesiologist is in surgery or with other patients?

For some of my patients, the wait to get into a room and/or get their epidural has been hours.

This is why it is so important to get solid on your comfort measures and pain management techniques even if you know you'll be wanting an epidural.
It's also why you'll want to hire a doula to help support you through the pain and to help keep you calm and grounded while you're waiting for medical pain relief.

Here are some examples of comfort measures you can utilize while in a small triage room (or curtained off area):
●TENS machine (best started in early labour)
●breathwork (longer breath out)
●relaxing your shoulders, face and hands
●counter pressure (hip squeezes, pressure near the tailbone, thumbs or elbows in the lower back)
●heating pad or hot pack
●ice pack
●moving/swaying/rocking
●vocalizing (moaning, affirmations, low sounds)
●headphones in with relaxing music or deep relaxation scripts
●regular hydration
●sitting on the toilet
●labour comb or something spiky to hold
●acupressure points
●lunging
●massage
●focal point/visualization
●side-lying release (re: Spinning Babies)
●eye mask or something to cover the computer screens (bedsheet, coat, bag, rebozo)

I would love to know your experience waiting for your epidural and how you were able to cope through the intensity of labour in the meantime.

Much Love!
Carrie 💜

Happy Mother's Day!
I am truly in awe of what it takes to be a mother (or a mother figure)...the energy and commitment it takes to show up, get creative and resourceful, ask for help when we need and otherwise carry the load of raising other humans...it's no joke.
I see you, mamas, and I am sending you so much Love. 💞

It is tremendous to have experts when emergencies occur but not every expert would treat or approach a given situation in exactly the same way.
Therefore, let's make a practice of cultivating trust in ourselves as well.
Let's get solid on feeling what feels right or off.
Let's normalize asking all the questions and getting all the information - and checking in with our instincts - before moving forward vs only trusting in the expert.
You know more than you've been led to believe you do.

Much Love,
Carrie 💜

One year ago today this legend - aka my dad - left this earth and I've missed him every day since.
I still feel his presence though...when I hear songs on the radio that remind me of him (he was a rockstar... that's him second from the right in the sepia picture 😊)...when I'm feeling down. I feel his encouragement.
I'm understanding more and more the gift that having him as my dad was.
He's pure energy now and honestly he never feels far away, which is pretty cool. It's like he's saying hello to me sometimes...and even though it feels weird, you might hear me say "Hey dad!" out of nowhere. 😁

Love you papa,
Carrie 💜

My family and I are currently in the season where we can't go away - even on a long daytrip - without hiring someone to come take care of our senior dog.
He needs extra care and attention now, as well as daily medication.

I was recently looking into hiring a petsitter to come and stay in our home while we're away, and this process has helped me appreciate even more how much trust and vulnerability goes into choosing and hiring someone who you've never met before to provide care and support for something and someone really, super important to you.

So to all the moms-to-be out there who are searching for a doula to support you and your partner, I honour where you are at and the decision you are making - may you find the perfect person, someone you feel great around, who provides reassurance, who brings you back to yourself, who believes in you fully and who is there for the one and only you.

Much Love,
Carrie 💜

P.S. Let me know if you know an amazing, trustworthy dogsitter in Airdrie or Calgary!

Here are my oldest and youngest daughters rock climbing together (Karis on the right and Selina in pink, on the left). 🥰

Things I might say to encourage my rock climbing daughters that you also may hear me say to my labouring mamas:
•You're safe
•You're doing it
•You're so strong
•Dig deep
•Breathe
•Lean into it
•It's ok to let go
•Trust your body
•You're working so hard

I see your feats of strength, you super strong humans, and I believe in you. 💜
