BE ALL THERE

It’s finally Friday. I’ve had an insanely busy week and the weekend will probably be not much less busy. Have you noticed this week that maybe you don’t have the best work-life balance? Here’s one tip to help you improve in that area.

Be all there.

What . . .?

Have you ever noticed when you are in a restaurant, so many people are bent over looking at their phones instead of talking with whoever is at the table with them? How sad is that? Heads down and fingers tapping the screen of their phones equals time lost, the personal interaction with others is lost, and the idea of just being in the moment - LOST.

If the distraction is all about work, endeavor to plan better while at work. Of course, there will always be exceptions. However, plan not to always be the exception and to be in the moment instead.

Time – life - flies by so very quickly. So, bottom line, wherever you are, and whatever you’re doing this weekend, be present in your own life.

BE ALL THERE.

Have great weekend.

KICKING THE JUNK FOOD HABIT

I had another client come in to see me recently about releasing some weight. And yet again, when I spoke to them about changing their diet, they came back and said, “all I need to do is exercise more”. No, no, no, no, no, my friends. NO!

We’ve been conditioned to think of exercise as a key ingredient — perhaps the most important ingredient — of any weight loss effort. But truthfully, the evidence has shown for years that exercise, while great for health, isn’t all that important for weight loss. Weight reduction really is all about what you put in your mouth. It’s about kicking that junk food habit.

Exercise helps prevent cancers, improves blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels, improves sleep, attention, energy, mood, and so much more. Exercise has unquestionably proven itself to be the world’s best drug – better than any pharmaceutical product any doctor could ever prescribe. But sad to say, kids, exercise is not a weight loss drug.

Don’t get me wrong; we still need to exercise to reap those wonderful benefits I mentioned above. But the bottom line is (wait for it . . . ):

YOU CAN’T OUT EXERCISE A BAD DIET!

If you’re having trouble regulating what you’re eating, contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique.) We’ll work with you to remove those subconscious limiting beliefs that are keeping you from eating well so that you can release those excess pounds.

The Healthy Life is not just about losing the weight; it’s about losing the mindset and the lifestyle that got you there in the first place.

AGE IS ONLY A NUMBER

We’ve all heard the saying, “You’re only as old as you feel.” But let’s be honest: sometimes when you look in the mirror do you feel a little older than you’d like?

Did you know that you can eat your way to firmer, more hydrated, and yes, glowing skin without expensive creams or health-compromising surgery? Do quote my Morter mentors, “it’s an inside-out job”. It’s true that what you put INTO your body will reflect on the OUTSIDE.

What to eat, you ask? Here are a few tips:
• Fruits rich in color – such as berries – have vitamin C, which promotes skin-firming collagen and antioxidants. Eating berries can also make your pores look smaller.
• Orange seafood, like salmon, contains astaxanthin, an antioxidant more potent than vitamins C and E.
• Powerful antioxidants like pomegranates and broccoli fight sun damage, but of course staying out of the sun or using sunscreen can eliminate damage in the first place.
• Green and orange veggies increase Vitamin A levels, making skin cells shed faster for a radiant, bright complexion.
• Soybeans and yams contain plant estrogens, which can add luster to your skin.

Remember, what you choose to consume is just as important as what you decide not to. Here are a few more suggestions:
• Balancing your sugar intake with cinnamon can help. Processed sugar can harden collagen and lead to sagging. 1/8 tsp of cinnamon can lower the sugar in your blood for two weeks..
• Avoid fried foods and caffeine as they interfere with nutrient absorption and can cause your skin to become sallow.
• And it goes without saying that alcohol and processed foods weaken the immune system.

My friends, it’s all about BALANCE. I like the 80-20 rule: eat very well 80% of the time, and the rest don’t worry about too much. If you’re having trouble with managing your diet, contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and we’ll work with you to get you back on the road to healthy and happy balance.

Age is only a number. You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to feel old.

PIVOTING CAN GIVE YOU WINGS

I used to be a hard-core dancer. And by dancer, I mean ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical: you name it, I did it. I began dancing at age 4 and it was my life. I lived to dance, and I loved doing it. And - I was really good at it. (Just FYI: the leaping girl in the pic is my daughter in 2013 at the UVIC dance company.)

Then a time came when I had to have some surgeries on my left foot to correct a structural problem that was causing me a lot of pain. I was told I would probably never dance again. I was devastated but being 15 and stubborn, that was not acceptable to me. So, when the casts finally came off, I threw myself into physio and retraining myself to regain my lean muscle mass and the strength and flexibility that I had lost. I especially loved to jump (I had GREAT elevation) and learning to jump high and land gracefully again was especially hard. Some days it actually felt like torture: I’d jump and cry and cry and jump. But I never lost sight of my vision, which was to dance as well as I did before. But I had to learn to pivot, both literally and figuratively. I had to learn patience: patience with myself and my limitations and endurance waiting for time to pass to bring healing.

And then that day finally came. I was back dancing full time and could throw myself into my jeté’s again. It was . . . bliss!

A pivot is a change in strategy without a change in vision. I’m here to tell you that opportunities to find deeper powers within us come when life seems most challenging. If I hadn’t gone through that trial and pivoted, I wouldn’t have learned patience and perseverance and would never have known what I can really do when I push myself.

Life is all about change, about pivoting. You can make the impossible possible.

Question: what if that change – that pivot – you’re avoiding is the one that gives you wings?

Have a pivotal weekend.

7 RULES OF LIFE

It’s Wednesday and Wednesdays sometimes feel like Mondays in the middle of the week. So . . . to give you a little boost to make it Pump Day instead of Hump Day, I thought it might help to remind you of the 7 Rules of Life.

1. MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR PAST so it won’t screw up your present.
2. WHAT OTHERS THINK OF YOU is none of your business.
3. TIME HEALS ALMOST EVERYTHING. Give it time.
4. DON’T COMPARE YOUR LIFE TO OTHERS, and don’t judge them. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
5. STOP THINKING TOO MUCH. It’s alright not to know the answers. They will come when you least expect it.
6. NO ONE IS IN CHARGE OF YOUR HAPPINESS, except you.
7. SMILE. You don’t own all the problems in the world.

In case you haven’t noticed, these 7 Rules are all about what you think and how it’s affecting your life. Thoughts ARE things, and if you feel plagued with limiting beliefs, contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). Using this gentle modality, we’ll work with you to change your stinking thinking and get you back on the road to healthy and happy.

So Happy Hump Day, peeps! Remember the rules, take a deep breath, and then remember that you’re halfway to the weekend. How good is that?!

TAKING CARE OF THE FUTURE

It’s Monday How many times today are you going to say, “Is it Friday yet?”. And you wish away your week never truly being in the present.

What. A. Waste.

Instead of worrying about what may never happen, or just living for the weekend, live for the day. This day. The time is now. Why? Time is a limited commodity, so live with a sense of urgency. Live with the gratitude of having another opportunity to do good and go for your dreams and goals.

James Baraz said, “Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will); being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won’t).”

If you’re having trouble living in the present moments of your life - if you’re stuck in your yesterdays or fearful of your tomorrows - contact us at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). We’ll work with you to remove the subconscious interference that is keeping you from being your best self and being healthier and happier.

News Flash: The best way to take care of the future is to take care of the present moment. Don’t you think it’s time to start now?

ARE YOU CARRYING A GRUDGE?

We’ve all been hurt or wounded emotionally by someone at some point in our lives. It may have been a friend, a co-worker, or a loved one that did us wrong. Sometimes we can easily let those hurt feelings go, but at times we get stuck in our story and our pain. We start to carry a grudge. And when you carry a grudge, you can start to feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your back.

Various studies have shown that bitter people holding grudges had higher blood pressure and were more likely to die from heart disease than more forgiving people. This could be due to something called a C-reactive protein, which has been linked to heart disease and stroke. When we experience negative feelings – like those brought on by conflict - our sympathetic nervous system kicks into gear and our bodies get ready to fight. Staying in that “fight” mode for an extended period of time can increase the amount of the C-reactive protein in our bloodstreams, potentially increasing the likelihood of heart disease.

On top of that, harboring feelings of resentment can also negatively impact metabolism, immune response, and organ function. Holding a grudge can also heighten physical pain. Those hard feelings also put you at a higher risk of developing depression and anxiety.

What to do? FORGIVE!!!!

I know that forgiving is easier said than done but think about this. Anyone can hold a grudge, but it takes a person with character to forgive. When you forgive, you release yourself from a painful burden. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that what happened was okay, and it doesn’t mean that person should still be welcome in your life. It just means you have made peace with the pain and are ready to let it go.

And lastly, think about this. You could hold on to more precious memories if your hands weren’t so full of grudges you are carrying so closely.

Have a great – and forgiving – weekend.

TENDER MERCIES

Last year at about this time, I finished at my clinic early one afternoon, so my husband and I took a short trip to the Saskatoon Farm. The sun was shining, the sky was clear blue, I was with my sweetie, and was at one with the world. There was a woman in a compact sedan a few car lengths ahead of me in the lane to my right. She signalled to try to change lanes, and no one would let her in, so I slowed my car a bit and made room so she could change lanes. She was probably relieved as her lane was running out and gave me the cheeriest wave as she went on her way.

That wave made me unexpectedly happy, and I broke into a very big smile. I’ve often thought that I must have a cloaking device on my car because usually when I let someone in, they don’t acknowledge the kindness, but she did. At that moment I realized that it really doesn’t take much to make me happy: a smile, a wave, or a kind word now and then that does wonders for me.

It got me thinking about the nature of happiness, and I decided that it is mostly those small moments - those little tender mercies that others give us - that make lasting, impressions written on our hearts.

I’ve also found that many people these days seem to feel that everyone’s out to get them and that the world is a very dark, scary place. Granted, there is a lot of bad happening in the world today, but there’s also a lot of good going on and a lot of good people sharing their kindness and love. If you find that YOUR outlook is more pessimistic than optimistic, contact us at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). We’ll work with you to help remove those subconscious patterns that are causing your pessimistic ponderings and negatively affecting your health and relationships.

No, it really doesn’t take much to make someone’s day. As Joseph Campbell said, “We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.”

Be somebody’s reason to smile. Today.

ARE YOU SKILLFULLY STILL?

I had a very busy day yesterday. Got up early, did some studying, put an order in for my business, put a dent in the house cleaning, did my morning getting-ready routine, went to my clinic and saw some lovely people, did more errands, got home, had a 45 minute break, made a de-licious yet healthy dinner changed my clothes, drove to and visited a family, menbe, and finally arrived home at about 9:00 PM.

Yikes!

Despite all the busy-ness, I was able to find some zen moments of mindfulness, some moments of stillness. Those moments usually didn’t happen when I was still. They happened while I was usually in the middle of an activity. Whether it was enjoying feeling the sun on my face as I drove, remembering laughing at my husband’s silly puns, really listening to – no, that’s not right – really hearing a woman’s pain and frustration regarding her day-to-day trials, I was grateful that I could be present in those moments and present in my life.

It's not always easy to be present in our lives. We tend to dwell in the land of “what if”, “if only”, or “coulda, shoulda, woulda”, and when we do, we miss the beauty of the moment and the lessons of that moment.

My weekend is going to be crazy busy, but I know that if I choose to, I can be mindfully present in each and every moment, learn the lessons I need to learn, and find joy in my journey. It takes some skill, but if I choose to, I can be “still”.

Have a skillfully “still” weekend.
