BECOMING A CLASSIC

We live in a culture where we celebrate youth and think that aging is something to be feared.

We are all aging every single day. It’s inevitable. We need to realize that aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength. As much as we try, no one can actually avoid aging, but aging productively is something else. I look on aging as an extraordinary process where I’m becoming the person I always should have been.

Nobody grows old merely by living a certain number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals, our dreams, and that which bring us joy. You may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. It’s all in your attitude. Just tell yourself, “I’m not getting older; I’m becoming a classic!”

Yes – I love my age. Old enough to know better. Young enough not to care. Experienced enough to do it right.

Have a great, age-appropriate weekend.

MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE

A few years ago my husband was starting to make dinner. He was juggling a tomato when it flew up and out of his hand. I looked to see where it landed so I could clean up the mess, but wait! It didn’t land. The tomato impossibly got wedged between the two handles of one of our cupboards. Ross and I both burst out laughing. “You couldn’t do that again if you tried”, I said. It was so weirdly, wonderfully wacky that I had to take a picture of it.

Sometimes, despite what we might believe, the impossible actually happens. St. Francis of Assisi said, “Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

Love that. Just start.

Sometimes the difference between the possible and the impossible lies in a person’s determination. You know, at first our dreams seem impossible, but as we change our limiting beliefs and then our resolve, they become merely improbable, and as we do more changing, ultimately inevitable. All that depends on eliminating our limiting beliefs.

If you feel your stinking thinking is holding you back, contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). Using this gentle hands-on modality, we’ll work with you to change those subconscious patterns that are holding you back.

Ask that flying tomato. It’ll tell you that nothing is impossible. I mean, even the word itself says I’m possible.

FEELING YOUR FEELINGS

Do you ever feel like your feelings don’t fit into your body? Do you ever feel that you’re so full of a certain emotion that you feel like you’re going to burst? We often try to hide our feelings but forget that our eyes can speak.

We all experience both positive and negative emotions. That’s what makes us human. But while your feelings are valid, it’s more important to remember that your feelings are not facts. What we feel is not reality but a response to reality. Your emotions are an essential part of what you are, but they are not who you are.

You don’t want to stuff down your feelings. Feelings may not be facts but can affect your thoughts and beliefs, and . . . thoughts are things. Elizabeth Gilbert said, “Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions.” So - by connecting with our emotions, we become more in control of our feelings, thereby becoming more in control of how we respond to the facts of life.

If you’re not in control of your emotions but they are controlling you and getting in the way of your success or negatively affecting your health, contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and schedule your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). Using this gentle hands-on technique, we’ll help to remove the subconscious emotional interference that is causing your dis-ease in whatever form it’s occurring.

Remember, your feelings don’t define you. Have them but don’t be had by them.

IT’S CASUAL FRIDAY (OR IS IT?)

It’s Friday again. Depending on where you’re working (at home or at an office), it may be deemed a casual Friday, a day to dress down. Although I must say, since many have been working from home, every day seems to be casual Friday according to their mode of dress. Not judging, just commenting.

Casual has a few meanings:
• Relaxed and unconcerned;
• Not regular or permanent;
• Carefree, complacent, or flippant.

I’d like to focus on one of those meanings – complacency.

In my never-to-be-humble opinion, I think that complacency is the kiss of death for any person, professional or not. Complacency can become man’s greatest weakness. It creeps up on us when we least expect it. Complacency is always the forerunner of mediocrity, and sadly, I think our society has become content with the mediocre. Not everyone should get the gold medal, the blue ribbon, or the trophy, and not everyone is a star. It’s okay to excel, people, and to be successful.

Strange as it may seem, however, success can breed complacency. And then complacency can breed failure. How? When we allow yesterday’s success to lull us into today’s complacency, we are laying the foundation for failure. I love the following quote:

“The tragedy of life is not found in failure but complacency. Not in you doing too much, but doing too little. Not in you living above your means, but below your capacity. It’s not failure but aiming too low, that is life’s greatest tragedy.” – Benjamin E. Mays

So don’t get too casual – too complacent - with your life, especially when you achieve a certain level of success. When you do something, even if you’ve done it a thousand times already, do your best. Give it your all. Complacency is easy, people, and it stagnates the soul.

May your hunger for change, for improvement, for something better, be greater than your complacency to stay the same. And have a great, but not too casual, Friday.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

A lot of things in life are about prevention. What should we be doing, you ask? You know I’m going to tell you.

1. EAT WELL: If you’re at all concerned about your health and your immune system, lay off the chips and the chocolate and eat some real food ie. fresh veggies and fruit, lean proteins, some healthy grains. And if you’re taking any supplements, make sure you’re taking high quality ones.
2. DRINK LOTS OF WATER: Our bodies are composed of about 80% water. It’s vital for all the important functions of your body. And we think WAY better when we’re properly hydrated.
3. EXERCISE: Make sure you’re doing some kind of exercise daily. Mix it up between aerobic and weight-bearing exercise. Walking back and forth to the fridge doesn’t count.
4. GET GOOD SLEEP: Make sure you’re getting good quality sleep every night. If you’re brain is racing all the time, do some deep breathing and lay off your phone, computer, and TV before sleep. Journaling helps alleviate stressors that are keeping you from sleeping.
5. THINK GOOD THOUGHTS. Thoughts really are things. Pretty much what you focus on is what you will have. We don’t have a lot of control over what is going on in the world today, but we CAN control what we think and how we act – not react – when life happens to us. If you’re focusing on stress and anxiety all the time, you’re compromising your immune system. Remember that anxiety is nothing more than repeatedly re-experiencing failure in advance.
6. HAVE SOME FUN – LAUGH. When we have fun and laugh, we boost our T-cell production, lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels, increase endorphins (feel good hormones), and improve our cardiac health. Find something that tickles your funny bone.

As I said before, we may not be in control of much these days, but doing the 6 things listed above is totally within your control. They’re not that hard to do and have a positive domino effect that will greatly benefit you in preventing disease, because, after all . . .

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.

ARE YOU ON YOUR LAST NERVE?

I’ve had several clients come in the last few weeks who’ve said they’ve been uncharacteristically short or impatient verbally with someone or several someones that they’ve encountered. Hmmm. Have you noticed that trend happening?

Did you ever have one of those days when you only had ONE nerve left, and someone got on it?
At times do you feel like saying, “This is my last nerve and you’re on it. Just walk away slowly and quietly and no one will get hurt. Maybe.”

I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes I envy people who seem irresponsible or uncommitted, but I worry that if I act like them instead of being understanding, I might start to enjoy it and become someone I find frustrating.

Let’s face it: we have all stood in the line of fire from someone who just walks in nastiness in life. That is unfortunate. And sometimes we just lose it and find that WE’RE the one dealing out the nastiness. That, my friends, is even more unfortunate.

So . . . why do we do that?

I have often found that when people just lose it, it’s not so much that they’ve changed, but that their mask has fallen off. We all put on that mask at times (I like to call it our ‘Sunday face’) that says to the world “I’m fine; everything is fine.” It’s that ‘Sunday face’ that hides our fear and anxiety and disappointments and sadness. But just like the physical masks we used to wear, that emotional mask, that ‘Sunday face’, can get incredibly suffocating and heavy and we just, well, lose it.

So . . . what can you do about it?

If you’re feeling like you’re on your last nerve, it’s time to breathe and reboot, and consider having a B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-energetic Synchronization Technique). With the B.E.S.T. technique, we can gently remove the subconscious interference that is causing your distress and really give your body, your mind, and your attitude and perspective an actual reboot. Contact us today at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) so we can help you change your perspective and attitude through a B.E.S.T. treatment.

Remember, a bad attitude is like a flat tire. You can’t go anywhere until you change it.

PEACE, MAN

A lot of people get caught up in trying to obtain perfection. They think that the definition of perfection is being without fault or blemish. But did you know that the Latin root of perfection, perfectus, means to finish?

Hmmmm. Doesn’t that put things into a different perspective? I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’m going to be “finished” in this life.

Once you understand that, life seems to fall into place. Don’t try to understand everything. Sometimes it’s not meant to be understood. Just accepted. Accept that you will never be perfect, that life will always have challenges, and that other people will disappoint you sometimes.

Iyanla Vanzant said, “Acceptance does not mean you agree with, appreciate, condone, or even like what has happened. Acceptance means that you know, regardless of what happened, that there is something bigger than you at work. It also means that you know you are okay and will continue to be okay.”

No, being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections. Acceptance is the first step towards peace.

And peace, my friends, is perfection.

Have a perfectly peaceful weekend.

FINE TUNING

Have you ever thought of the world as a radio station that’s broadcasting music? You are the radio and want to produce good sound, not static. Sometimes, the signal from the station may be distorted because of bad weather. But more often than not, the static is just a result of improper tuning. And once you tune the radio, almost miraculously the harsh and grating sound turns into a beautiful melody.

Our minds are also like the radio. Some rigorous mental tuning can make our moods better and change our focus. How do we sharpen that “sound”?
I say this all the time, but here it is one more time.

Thoughts are things.

What you think, you become.
What you feel, you attract.
What you imagine, you create.

It all begins and ends with your mind. What you give power to has power over you - IF you allow it. You can choose what you focus on: positivity or negativity. Train your mind to see the good in everything. Positivity is a choice. The happiness of your life depends on the positivity of your choices.

If you’re finding you have difficulty having a positive focus and mindset, it’s time to contact us at Touchstone Health (https://touchstonehealthcalgary.com) and book your first B.E.S.T. treatment (Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique). Using this gentle, hands-on modality, we’ll work with you to change those negative, limiting thoughts that are preventing your progress and get you back on the road to healthy and happy.

My friends, once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.

In other words, what you tune into is what you turn into.

We’ll work with you to remove those subconscious beliefs that are interfering with you becoming your best, successful, healthy self.

SERENDIPITY

“Life is not merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences. But rather, it’s a tapestry of events that culminate in an exquisite, sublime Plan.” – Serendipity, the movie.

Love the movie and love that.

What is Serendipity? Some people call it luck or good fortune, which are both true. I really like this definition, though. Serendipity: the effect by which one accidentally stumbles across something truly wonderful especially while looking for something truly unrelated. For example, Alexander Fleming’s discovery of the first antibiotic, Penicillin, is a regarded a result of serendipity. He hastily stacked his petri dishes of cultured bacteria on a workbench while he went away on vacation, and they became contaminated with a bacteria-killing mold. That stroke of luck, combined with his wisdom to notice things he wasn’t looking for, earned him a Nobel Prize and a place in medical history.

Years ago, my husband, daughter, and I were on vacation walking in downtown Victoria, B.C. We were looking for a particular address when we took what we thought was a wrong turn and ended up in a back “alley” that was a secret, exquisite wall garden. It was a feast for the senses with its gorgeous greenery and flowers and its wonderfully fresh fragrance. While it didn’t result in momentous awards for us, we received the reward of peace, beauty, and joy. I’ll never forget it. It was a moment of true serendipity.

Can we ‘create’ serendipity? Yes, but it comes as a result of action. It isn’t just fate, destiny, or luck. We need to vary our routines, be observant, make mental space for something different or unexpected, relax our boundaries, draw on our previous experiences, look for patterns, and above all, seize opportunities.

What people call serendipity sometimes is just having your eyes open. It could result in something unexpected that changes your life.

Have a serendipitous weekend.
