September is Su***de Prevention Month. 🤍

Cancer conversations tend to revolve around survival.

Scans, chemo, surgeries, medications, appointments. Is the treatment working? Did the tumour shrink? What do we try next?

So much energy goes into keeping someone alive that I think we sometimes forget what it actually feels like for the person trying to live through all of it.

Cancer can take so damn much from someone without taking their life.

Their independence. Career. Finances. Relationships. Confidence. Sense of normalcy. The future they pictured for themselves.

I watched how quickly life could become measured in bloodwork, pain levels, medication schedules and the time between appointments. As someone who loved her more than anything, my brain was constantly searching for the next thing I could do. Something to fix. Something to make easier. Something that might give us more time.

You become so desperate to add days to someone’s life that it’s easy to forget how unbearably heavy some of those days can be.

There is suffering that no blood test measures and no scan will ever show.

Fear lives there. So does loneliness. Depression. Anxiety. Financial stress. Loss of identity. The exhaustion of waking up every day in a body and a life you barely recognize anymore.

None of that becomes less important just because there is a bigger, scarier diagnosis sitting in the room.

That is when I had to slow down and think… Maybe caring for someone with cancer also means making space for the conversations nobody wants to have. Giving them permission to say that they’re scared, angry, exhausted or not okay without immediately trying to make it positive.

Sometimes “How are you?” needs to be asked twice. Or in a different way.

Sometimes the strongest person in the room needs someone to notice they’re tired of being strong.

We fight so fu***ng hard to give people more time.

I just hope we learn to care as fiercely about the life inside that time, too.

Mental health care is cancer care. 🤍🎗️

If you or someone you love is struggling with thoughts of su***de, call or text 988 in Canada or the United States for 24/7 crisis support.

They talk about surviving the goodbye, but how do you survive the silence that answers when you still call their name? 🖤🥀

Death may have decided that you were done growing older, but it never taught me how to stop needing you. And, well…. I don’t think I ever will.

I used to laugh when you’d introduce me as your little sister. I’d ask you why you always had to say “little.”

You never stopped seeing me that way.

No matter how old I got, some part of me was always going to be your little sister.

I never knew how much safety there was in that
until you weren’t here to say it anymore.

I hope wherever you are,
you still know I’m your little sister.

Because down here,
I’m still looking for you like one. 🥀

I sit staring at walls wondering where she is. I lie awake looking at the ceiling, still waiting for a call that I know isn’t coming. I wipe my tears on a daily, hoping God gives me enough strength to keep her name alive. Life has felt so lonely and confusing without her.

And despite all of these feelings, a glimmer of hope recently landed in my inbox.

I sat there crying as I watched it.

Thinking about how effortlessly Jasleen loved people, how she could just spark up a convo, and shed light into someone’s world within minutes… As heartbreaking as it is that this is how we honour her now, what a blessing it is to witness how deeply she was loved, and how beautifully she’ll continue to be remembered. 🤍🦋

Some people celebrate birthdays by receiving. Others celebrate by giving.

On July 10th, her birthday, Arti Priya chose to honour Jasleen’s memory through an incredible act of kindness.

Having witnessed the impact cancer can have on a family, she chose to give back in a truly meaningful way.

Over 100 children were provided with a warm meal of daal, sabji, rice, and roti. Each child also received a happiness kit filled with little treats like cookies and candy- small joys they may not otherwise get to experience.

She also extended support to a family of three children who recently lost their mom.

There are so many ways to keep someone’s love alive after they’re gone. This is one of them. And I know we’re not alone with this.

Thank you, Arti Priya , for carrying Jasleen’s light into the world. I know she is soo so soooo deeply touched by this.

Your kindness means more than I can ever put into words. 🤍
