TRAINER TIP TUESDAY 🏋️

MIND-MUSCLE CONNECTION: MORE THAN JUST “FEELING THE BURN”

The mind-muscle connection isn’t simply about thinking hard enough to make a muscle grow. It’s about maintaining the intended movement pattern of@the activated muscle in question as fatigue sets in.

As a target muscle approaches fatigue, your body naturally looks for the easiest way to complete the movement. This often means recruiting stronger muscles, changing your technique, shortening the range of motion, or using momentum to compensate.

For example, during a biceps curl, fatigued biceps often lead to swinging the torso, driving with the hips, or allowing the shoulders and upper traps to take over. The weight still moves, but the target muscle is no longer doing most of the work.

Developing a strong mind-muscle connection means recognizing when compensation begins and resisting the urge to let other muscles steal the workload. Sometimes that means reducing the weight, slowing the tempo, or ending the set before technique breaks down.

The goal isn’t only simply to complete the repetition, it is also to ensure the intended muscle completes the repetition.

Train the targeted muscle of the movement.

What’s one exercise where you struggle most to maintain a strong mind-muscle connection?

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY 💭
-The Tyranny of Endless Options-

Modern society has given people unprecedented access to information, products, programs, and advice. Yet despite having more choices than any generation before us, many people seem less certain than ever about what to do.

The challenge is no longer a lack of information. Rather, it is an excess of it.

Every scroll presents a new “expert”. A new diet. A new workout. A new supplement. A new morning routine. A new shortcut promising better results.

Algorithms tend to reward novelty rather than evidence-based solutions.

The consequence is that many people never remain committed long enough to discover whether a strategy actually works. They become trapped in a cycle of perpetual optimization rather than meaningful ex*****on.

Psychologists call this the paradox of choice. When options become unlimited, decision-making becomes more difficult, commitment weakens, and satisfaction often declines.

In fitness, the fundamentals have remained largely unchanged for decades :

•Move regularly
•Strength train
•Eat appropriately
•Recover adequately
•Repeat consistently

The problem is that fundamentals are not exciting.

Yet people tend to think that the next “big thing” always is. It usually never is.

I have seen people on my feed jump from one fitness fad to another for eons with little to no personal physical gains.

Progress is not about finding a better plan.
It is about staying with an individualized, scientifically-founded one long enough to let it work.

NINETEEN YEARS. 💙🧡

For nearly two decades, Patricia Barrett has been part of CounterBalance.

Nineteen years of early mornings and late evenings of coaching, mentoring, encouraging, supporting, and helping people become stronger versions of themselves both inside and outside the gym walls.

Patricia brings a calm professionalism filled with wisdom and depths of knowledge in everything she does. With her background in recreation, training, sport, and human performance, she has helped guide countless members through their fitness journeys with an approach rooted in balance, structure, education, and genuine care for people.

Over the years, she has become far more than a trainer to many within our community. She has become a familiar face, a trusted mentor, a steady presence, and an important part of the community that makes CounterBalance what it is today.

In an industry where people often come and go, nineteen years speaks volumes.

It speaks to loyalty, to consistency and to character.

Patricia, thank you for everything you have contributed to CounterBalance and our clients over the past 19 years. Your impact has helped shape this facility, this team, and this community in ways that extend far beyond the training floor.

Congratulations on 19 incredible years with CounterBalance and helping thousands of people find their strength over the year. 💪

Here’s to you! 🥂

Sincerely,
The CounterBalance Team

TRAINER TIP TUESDAY 🏋️

PARTIAL REPS VS. FULL RANGE OF MOTION

Few topics in strength training spark more debate than partial reps versus full range of motion.

The truth? Both have a place.💪

Full range of motion training generally develops strength, mobility, stability, and muscle through the greatest available movement arc. For most individuals, this should form the foundation of a well-designed training program.

Partial reps, however, are not inherently “wrong.” They can be used strategically to overload specific portions of a lift, work around temporary limitations, increase time under tension, or continue training after full-range fatigue has been reached.

The problem arises when partial reps become the default rather than full range of motion.

If you squat only halfway because the weight is too heavy (and it’s not due to biomechanical limitations), then that’s not advanced programming. If your bicep curl never reaches full extension because you’re chasing a heavier dumbbell, you’re sacrificing movement quality for ego.

Effective training is about understanding why you’re using a particular method at any given time.

Full range of motion builds the foundation. Partial reps can be used to build upon it.

Train with scientific intention, not limitation. 🏋🏽🏋🏻‍♀️
