This year’s International Cat Day is really hard for me, as I had to say goodbye to one of my sweet girls, Echo, a few weeks ago. I came out to the barn the day after and just walked the paddock and sobbed. The horses gave me a space where I didn’t have to explain how I felt, or pretend I was okay. I could simply be present, and they met me exactly where I was. Horses are so damn good at that; just holding space for our grief. There is never a time when cuddling with Zorya doesn’t make me feel at least a tiny bit better, especially when she’s all mushy and affectionate after dinner.

These kinds of experiences are a huge part of why I believe so deeply in Equine Assisted Learning. Horses have an incredible way of creating space for emotional processing and healing. I am so grateful to have them (and my other cat, Jem) to support me while I navigate all of this sadness. 🐱

DIY projects usually aren’t my thing, and until a month ago I’d never even used a cordless drill.

Yesterday, though, I successfully put up Zorya’s stall guard all on my own. It may not seem like much to some people, but I’m calling it a win!

It’s amazing how the little victories can boost your confidence!

This is the second of her birthdays we have celebrated since her adoption. She got a horsie birthday “cake” made with organic rolled oats and unsweetened apple sauce, with an apple heart as a garnish (I forgot to get a picture of the cake before she inhaled it)!

I promise I am not using clients for free labour! :) Barn chores can be far more than routine work. In equine assisted learning, tasks like filling water buckets, sweeping aisles, preparing feed and assisting with turnout/in can help people feel grounded, present, and capable. The steady rhythm of physical work supports regulation, brings attention into the body, and offers the satisfying experience of seeing a meaningful task through to completion.

For EAL clients, barn work also builds practical life skills—planning, responsibility, boundaries, and awareness of how our actions affect the horses and the environment around us.

For my friend’s belated birthday, I booked us a “cow cuddling session” at Triple C Farm, followed by petting the goats, sheep, donkey, alpacas and mini horses, and lastly hand feeding the ducks and chickens a snack! Triple C is a welcoming family-owned farm and animal rescue; I highly recommend booking one of their animal experiences.

Standardbred horses are known for their large nostrils! Zorya was interested in sniffing my iced coffee but she came to the conclusion that she didn’t want any for herself. 😆

I really thought spring had arrived, but in classic Ontario winter fashion, it was just a teaser for a few days.
