Featured next in our series on our wonderful new team members is Daisy Peter-Paul. Daisy is the Junior L’nu Researcher with AICH.

Daisy is a Mi’kmaq professional and academic, originally from Metepenagiag Mi’kmaq Nation, NB. Daisy holds a bachelor's of Psychology and Native Studies, a diploma in Cybersecurity and graduate certificate in Indigenous Counselling Psychology.

In her role as the Junior L’nu Researcher, Daisy is gaining experience with a range of research related skills and applying her expertise in IT, Mi’kmaq governance and education related projects..

Daisy will be pursuing a Master of Information program this fall at Dalhousie University, focusing on data management and innovation from a Wabanaki lens. We look forward to supporting Daisy along her research journey.

Our team has been growing over the past year, and in this series, we will be sharing some of our wonderful new colleagues!

The first team member we will highlight is Dylan Joudrie, who is the Research Coordinator with AICH.

Dylan is a Mi’kmaq Registered Nurse and a Research Coordinator with the Atlantic Indigenous Children’s Healing Initiative, with both Mi’kmaq and settler ancestry.

His work focuses on Indigenous health research, cultural safety education, and improving healthcare experiences through community-informed approaches.

Dylan contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational initiatives while supporting research that advances culturally safe, equitable, and responsive healthcare for Indigenous Peoples and communities.

We are grateful to have Dylan’s keen research skills and healthcare knowledge to drive our projects forward!

Did you know we have a blog? In our new blog series, Research Explained, we will be sharing teachings from our research. AICH has published over 20+ articles in the past two decades! ✨⚕

In our first infographic from this series, we explain how art research sessions with Mi’kmaw youth and children showed how Mi’kmaw youth and children express pain differently. Because of this, health practitioners need to use culturally-relevant tools and ways of connecting, to ensure that Mi’kmaw children’s health is properly treated.

Did you know that there are 13 Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia, each with unique, rich and interrelating histories? Nova Scotia is part of Mi’kma’ki, which includes New Brunswick, PEI, Maine, Newfoundland, and parts of Quebec.

During National Indigenous History month, we encourage you to learn more about the Indigenous histories of the Nations in your region, from Indigenous resources. In Mi’kma’ki, some of these resources include:

Attention: Mi’kmaw and Indigenous Health Research Undergraduate & Graduate Students

AICH is offering student research awards to an undergraduate, master's and doctoral student (3 total) to contribute to our research program development, evaluation, analysis and knowledge mobilization within the Etuaptmu’k W’loti project objectives. The overall goal of this funding program is to develop Mi’kmaq/Indigenous postsecondary health research capacity.

We have an exciting update!

With Springtime comes transformation and just like the seasons, we are changing. We have decided to rename and reconceptualize our work as the Atlantic Indigenous Children’s Healing (AICH) Initiative.

Moving from “Aboriginal” to “Indigenous” is in line with contemporary views on appropriate terms for Indigenous peoples. "Indigenous" better reflects the diversity of the original people, as well as the legality of Indigenous peoples' land claims, autonomy, rights and treatment.
