As a little girl growing up in an Italian-Canadian family, we had

family gatherings centered around food. My Nonno was a chef for the Italian army and my Mom studied nutrition. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than a bowl of homemade gnocchi with a fresh tomato sauce! (Just ask and I’ll give you my Nonno’s recipe.) I knew I was meant to become a Registered Dietitian when I realized how passionate I was about helping people, and sharing the joy that comes with having a healthy relationship with food. The ability to learn, teach, and inspire is what brought me into this evolving field. I founded Dietetic Directions in 2012 with the goal of building a place where people could receive personalized, motivational nutrition education that’s science-based and rooted in creating habits that fit your lifestyle. 📌 Dietitian Andrea’s Tips for the Best Caramelized Onions! 🧅

Why?! Caramelized onions are an AMAZING flavour booster to any meal 🙌

🧈 Use butter or oil to lightly coat your pan.
⏱️ Be patient! Perfect caramelized onions take time! I cook mine low and slow for approximately 30-60 minutes.
🥃 Deglaze! This is where you get all the extra flavour from the bottom of the pan, this prevents sticking too! I used whisky for mine but you can use wine, balsamic vinegar, beer, stock or even water.

✅ Storage: Caramelized onions last in the fridge for up to 1 week.

✅Uses: Add caramelized onions to pizza, burgers, sandwiches, onion soup, dips and more!

If you’ve never tried roasting fennel, it might surprise you! Roasted fennel is packed with the sweet, savoury and caramelized flavours. 😋

Roasting also helps to mute the anise (licorice) flavour, in case you’re not a fan. 💚
